Anisimova became is now the youngest American woman to reach the Wimbledon final since Serena Williams in 2004.

World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka’s dream run was halted by 13th seed Amanda Anisimova in the semi-finals, in a nerve-wrecking three setter. Anisimova joined Madison Keys and Coco Gauff as the third American to end the Belarusian’s hopes of lifting a Grand Slam major this year.

It all began with tight opening games one after the other, as both managed to hold their serves. The American led 5-4, and Sabalenka was serving to stay in the set. However, the 23-year-old took her game to new heights, delivering the first break of the match at the most important stage, and clinched the first set.

Sabalenka’s riposte highlighted her strong will power and determination. The top seed staged a tremendous comeback to level things and force a decider. The start to the third set was even more promising for the Belarusian, who broke at the beginning itself and had a maiden Wimbledon berth in sight.

The joy didn’t last long for Sabalenka, as Anisimova turned things around immediately, breaking back to level the set. The American then aimed to consolidate her advantage with a service hold.

During a tense deuce, Anisimova sent up a high defensive lob; with the entire court wide open, Sabalenka smashed the ball but sent it long beyond the baseline, allowing Anisimova to take a 2-1 lead.

The 27-year-old began to crumble under pressure as she quickly found herself broken again, and at 5-2, was serving to stay alive in the Championship. Anisimova decided to save her energy for the serving game and gifted a rare easy game to the Belarusian.

Serving for the match, the World No. 1 knew it was now or never. She started strongly, and was 0-30 up. While the American levelled things and was only two points away, Aryna Sabalenka won the next to earn a break point, only to be denied by the 13th seed. Things were extremely tight, and Anisimova finally got the match point she was after.

However, just as she had done against Elena Rybakina in Berlin, the World No. 1 not only saved a match point but also broke back, narrowing the gap from 2-5 to 4-5 and returning to serve.

Yet, Anisimova was determined to avoid another extended battle. She aggressively attacked Sabalenka’s second serves, earning three match points on the Belarusian’s serve and closing in on victory.

Despite the three-time Grand Slam champion’s best efforts, at 30-40, Anisimova unleashed a stunning cross-court forehand winner to seal her spot in a maiden Wimbledon final. As Sabalenka reflects, there was little to separate the two, but her lower second-serve success rate and poor break-point conversion (3/14) proved costly.

Anisimova’s incredible journey — from being ranked outside the top 400 in 2023 and losing in the final qualifying round last year, is an inspiring story of perseverance. Her comeback reminds every aspiring player to never give up on their dreams.

She extends her lead over Sabalenka on head-to-head by 6-3 and will next face the Iga Swiątek in the final, as Wimbledon prepares to crown a new female champion for the eighth consecutive year.
