Wimbledon will unveil a bronze statue of Andy Murray in 2027.

Andy Murray, one of Britain’s most celebrated athletes, will be honored with a bronze statue at Wimbledon in 2027, the All England Club announced on June 24. The tribute will coincide with the 150th anniversary of the prestigious tennis tournament, and notably, Murray himself will be closely involved in the design process.

The decision cements Murray’s legacy as a transformative figure in British tennis — the man who ended a 77-year wait for a homegrown men’s singles champion when he won Wimbledon in 2013, and repeated the feat again in 2016.

Debbie Jevans, Chair of the All England Club, confirmed the plans during an episode of the Performance People podcast hosted by Gabby and Kenny Logan.

“We’re working closely with him and his team,” Jevans said. “The ambition is that we would unveil (the statue) on the 150th anniversary of our first championships, which was 1877, so that would be in 2027,” as quoted by The Guardian.

She also added that the idea was partly inspired by the statue of Rafael Nadal installed at Roland Garros in 2021. “We looked at Rafa Nadal having that sort of plaque unveiled to him at Roland-Garros… and we thought, what do we want for Andy?”

The statue will be Wimbledon’s first full-body tribute to a male British player since Fred Perry, whose legacy loomed large until Murray shattered records and reignited the nation’s love for tennis. The sculpture is expected to be placed near Centre Court – the very stage where Murray delivered his most iconic performances.

Murray’s career achievements include three Grand Slam titles, two Olympic gold medals, a Davis Cup win, and a stint as world No.  #1. But his impact extends far beyond numbers — he has been a vocal advocate for gender equality in tennis, mental health awareness, and athlete welfare.

Though retired since the 2024 season, Murray continues to be a central figure in the sport, mentoring younger players and appearing at key ATP events.

Uniquely, the All England Club is inviting Murray to contribute to the creative process of his own statue. This collaborative approach sets it apart from previous Wimbledon tributes.

According to ESPN, Murray is expected to help choose the moment that will be immortalised — possibly his emotional victory collapse in 2013 or his triumphant wave to the crowd in 2016.

Fans react

The announcement has been met with widespread approval from fans and fellow athletes. Social media was flooded with messages of congratulations, gratitude, and nostalgia, with many calling it a “long overdue” recognition of Murray’s contribution to British sport.

The announcement sparked an outpouring of emotion across the tennis world. Fans, former players, and commentators took to social media to honour Murray’s legacy. The tweet below featured a highlight reel of Murray’s most iconic Wimbledon moments, calling the statue “a tribute to a champion who carried a nation’s hopes.”

The statue is expected to be unveiled in time for the 2027 Championships, a symbolic year that marks 150 years since the very first Wimbledon in 1877. It will stand as a testament not only to Murray’s greatness but also to the era he helped define.

“Andy has inspired millions with his resilience, authenticity, and sheer determination,” Jevans said. “We couldn’t imagine a more fitting way to mark the anniversary.”
