Both of them are the cleanest ball strikers on the current WTA Tour.

“I don’t think either of us likes to defend”, said Elena Rybakina ahead of her eleventh meeting with Aryna Sabalenka on the WTA tour. This line expresses this rivalry perfectly. Both have a similar game style, being hard hitters of the tennis ball, renowned for their ruthless hitting, making them two of the most feared opponents currently.

When on song, they can beat anyone on court, but things go equally badly when out of form. At present, Sabalenka has won more Grand Slams and been far more consistent, as a result of which, she holds the World No. #1 ranking, head and shoulders above everyone else.

The Belarusian has managed to reduce unforced errors and adopt aggression with caution, which has proven to be a game-changer for her.

Rybakina remained among the top five players for almost a year following her Wimbledon triumph, but recent poor performances have seen her drop out of the top 10 in the WTA rankings. The Kazakh has quickly become a player who has failed to deliver to her potential, despite a game style which is effective across all surfaces and conditions.

Rybakina is one of those few players who has performed well more often than not, against top-ranked rivals, but recurring injuries, sickness, and off-court controversies have hampered her form, both mentally and physically.

Sabalenka and Rybakina squared off for the first time, in Wuhan, back in 2021. Sabalenka won the match in three sets and defeated local hope Qinwen Zheng in the final to lift the trophy. The top-seed Sabalenka dominated this rivalry right from the start and was victorious in their first four encounters, including the action-packed Australian Open 2023 final.

A month later, in the Indian Wells final, Rybakina recorded her first win over Sabalenka, avenging her Australian Open loss and winning her first Masters 1000 title. Since then, this has been a see-saw battle, with most matches being closely fought and hardly any one-sided affairs.

After a slow start to this rivalry, Rybakina has managed to lessen the head-to-head advantage. After losing the final Down Under, the Kazakh has won four of her next six matches against Sabalenka, despite her average form, and the Belarusian is enjoying a purple patch. Expect fierce and competitive bouts between these two women, with many new chapters to this rivalry in the years to come.
