Madison Keys staged back-to-back upsets to win the title.

The Australian Open 2025 delivered incredible drama and high-voltage action, with Jannik Sinner and Madison Keys winning the championship in their respective categories. The level of tennis was breathtaking to watch, and the unpredictability added to the appeal for the audience.

The initial rounds were no pushovers, as even the top seeds had to battle hard to get to the next round. Ten-time Australian Open champion Novak Djokovic endured stern challenges in his first two rounds against unseeded opponents. The difficulty of the opening matches meant that the final eight included only four out of the top 10 WTA seeds.

The ‘Happy Slam’ provided the perfect opportunity for young talent to blend with the experienced athletes, with several youngsters outdoing themselves to secure a place in the history books. Both men’s and women’s singles witnessed several unexpected names make the top four, while some of the favourites including fourth seeds Taylor Fritz and Jasmine Paolini, fifth seeds Qinwen Zheng and Daniil Medvedev, crashed out of the competition.

5. Qinwen Zheng lost to Laura Siegemund

2024 Australian Open runner-up Qinwen Zheng was believed to be a prime contender for the title this year around, given her heroics last year. It wasn’t to be though for the Chinese, as Zheng fell to Germany’s Laura Siegemund in straight sets, in the second round of the marquee event.

This defeat sent shockwaves to the tennis fraternity as a title favorite was eliminated by an unseeded opponent, very early into the competition.

4. Andrey Rublev lost to Joao Fonseca

The rapidly improving Joao Fonseca, who battled his way through the qualifiers was expected to make life difficult for 10th seed Andrey Rublev. The Brazilian entered the Open as one of the most promising youngsters to watch out for, and he did not disappoint.

After winning the qualifying rounds in straight sets, Fonseca stunned the Russian in straight sets, in the very first round. The Brazilian made a real statement with his victory over a top-10 player, and many regarded him as the player to watch out for in the future. However, he was beaten by eventual semi-finalist Lorenzo Sonego in the second round.

3. Daniil Medvedev lost to Learner Tien

Former US Open champion and last season’s finalist Daniil Medvedev was expected to challenge the likes of Jannik Sinner and other top contenders. The Russian had a poor 2024 and would have hoped to get back to winning ways.

After emerging victorious in a gruelling first-round encounter, Thailand’s qualifier Learner Tien outclassed the fifth seed to produce one of the biggest upsets of the tournament.

2. Coco Gauff lost to Paula Badosa

2024 Australian Open semi-finalist Coco Gauff was looking for a maiden Grand Slam title at the Melbourne Park, but her aspirations were cut short by Paula Badosa in the quarter-final.

The 11th seed Spaniard stunned the 2023 US Open winner in straight sets to deny fans the highly anticipated battle between Sabalenka and Gauff. Badosa eventually bowed out of the competition in the semis, losing to the 2-time AO winner.

2025 Australian Open champion Madison Keys battled a tough draw to win her maiden a Grand Slam trophy at the iconic Rod Laver Arena.

After a couple of straightforward rounds, the American took on 10th seed Danielle Collins in the third round, former Wimbledon winner and fifth seed Elena Rybakina in the fourth round, five-time Grand Slam winner Iga Swiatek in the semis and finally two-time Australian Open winner Aryna Sabalenka in the finale.

Keys won each of her last four rounds in three sets, a testimony to her composure under pressure. The American produced her big serves and aces when she needed them the most and never let the situation get to her. She overcame a formidable lineup, stunning a half-fit Rybakina, dashing Iga Swiatek’s hopes of a maiden Australian Open title, and finally denying Aryna Sabalenka a rare three-peat in a nerve-wracking final.
