Shelton and Sonego prepare for their first meeting since 2023.

Ben Shelton joins Tommy Paul in the last eight by ending the inspired run of Gael Monfils in the Australian Open 2025. The French veteran was unable to join his wife, Elina Svitolina, in the quarters after retiring from his match against Shelton with an injury.

Monfils gave it his all, taking the first three sets to tie breaks. The 38-year-old threw in the towel with the scoreline at 7-6(3), 6-7(3), 7-6(2), 1-0 after nearly three hours on court. The 22-year-old Shelton was in the lead, two sets to one when Monfils shook the American’s hand to signal the end of his stay in Melbourne.

Monfils had sent home Shelton’s countryman Taylor Fritz in the previous round in four sets. The Frenchman had spent nine-and-a-half hours on court just to reach the fourth round, and the toll it had taken finally caught up with him.

Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego prevented an all-American quarter-final by ending the qualifier Learner Tien’s dream run in four sets, 6-3, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1. Sonego completed the formalities in 2 hours and 25 minutes. Tien could not find the level he displayed against Daniil Medvedev, making seven double faults and 29 unforced errors. The 19-year-old Tien will climb to an all-time career high of No. #80, a jump of 40 places thanks to his breakthrough run in Melbourne.

Preview

Ben Shelton and Lorenzo Sonego are all set to renew their rivalry for the third time in their careers and for the first time since they clashed in the opening round of the 2023 French Open. Sonego prevailed with a four-set win on that occasion.

Shelton is one of two Americans left in the main draw along with Tommy Paul after highly fancied and top-ranked Taylor Fritz fell by the wayside in the third round.

Either Shelton or Sonego will go on to make their semi-final debut on Wednesday. This will be only their second meeting on the Grand Slam stage since their first tour-level meeting at the ATP Masters 1000 Cincinnati in 2022. As the event reaches its business end, either Aussie Alex de Minaur or World No. #1 Jannik Sinner are likely rivals in the last four.

Match Prediction

Shelton avoided a lengthy fourth-round face-off against Gael Monfils when the Frenchman ended his Australian Open campaign due to an injury. If Monfils had been able to continue, it would have been a close call for the young American.

Facing Sonego will be a much stiffer test for Shelton after the Italian dispatched the American teenager, Learner Tien, in their third-round match. It was the second teen Sonego had to contend with following a second-round face-off with up-and-coming Brazilian Joao Fonseca.

Both players have bagged titles in 2024—Sonego at Winston-Salem and Shelton at Houston. A deep run will boost their confidence ahead of a lengthy 2025 season and will see them rise in the rankings. Shelton is up three places to No. 17 in the live rankings, while Sonego sees a significant increase from No. 55 to No. 35 at this point of the 2025 season.

Shelton, with his bruising serves has previously reached the quarter-final in Australia and will be keen to go one better. There has not been an American finalist or winner in Melbourne since Andre Agassi in 2003. The Atlanta native will look forward to filling those shoes and giving the American fans something to cheer about.

Result: Shelton to win in four sets.
