The Serb great has dropped a set each in his first two rounds.

Seventh seed Novak Djokovic is set to take on 26th seed Tomas Machac in the third round of men’s singles event at Australian Open 2025. The Serb legend has won both his matches till now at Melbourne Park in four sets.

In the first round, he went a set down before defeating American teen Nishesh Basavareddy 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-2. He then defeated Portuguese Jaime Faria 6-1, 6-7(4), 6-3, 6-2 in the second round, enduring a blip in the second set. With sterner tests coming up, Djokovic would not have wanted to spend so much time on the court in the first few rounds.

Czech Tomas Machac started off his campaign with a 6-3, 6-1, 7-5 victory against Indian lad Sumit Nagal. In the second round though, he had to fight very hard before securing a 3-6, 7-6(1), 6-7(5), 7-6(4), 6-4 victory against American Reilly Opelka. He could potentially be drained out in a clash, where he would need to put in his all in order to get past a player of Djokovic’s calibre.

Preview

Things haven’t really gone to plan for the 37-year-old Djokovic, after he broke the jinx to clinch a gold medal at the Paris Olympics 2024. He suffered a shock third round exit in the US Open, at the hands of Alexei Popyrin, ending a year without a Major title for just the second time since 2011. The Serb also pulled out of the ATP finals, citing an injury.

Djokovic wasn’t at his best in Brisbane, at the start of the year, where he ended up losing to Opelka in the quarterfinals. With a slow start here at Melbourne, by his lofty standards, the 24-time Grand Slam champion would want to pick his game up, as we near the end of the first week of the tournament. There aren’t too many though who have dealt with setbacks better than Djokovic.

With Andy Murray, the embodiment of grit, sitting in his box, rule the Serb’s chances of winning his 11th Australian Open title out at your own peril.

Machac had a stellar 2024 season, achieving his best ever performances at the Australian Open, in all four Slams. After reaching the fourth round of a Grand Slam for the first time, in New York, the Czech also managed to reach the semifinals at the Japan Open and the Shanghai Masters.

After an injury scare at the United Cup, the 24-year-old has well and truly turned up at Melbourne Park. A comfortable outing first up was followed by a marathon match, which lasted nearly three hours and thirty minutes.

Match Prediction

Djokovic outclasses Machac in most aspects. The Serb has one of the greatest backhands of all-time. An aggressive baseline player, his groundstrokes have troubled opponents for nearly two decades. More importantly, his age and recent injuries have not impeded his flexibility and athleticism.

The year 2024 has seen the decline of the Serb and the rise of the Czech. However, it is still nearly a mismatch. Machac would need to have recovered and be at his absolute best, and avoid making unforced errors, a tendency which you often see when players go up against opponents superior to them, in doing a bit extra.

While securing a victory is a tall ask, he might be able to pick up a set, considering Djokovic’s recent woes. The Serb, on his part, would be looking to secure potentially a victory in direct sets and conserve energy for bigger challenges ahead, as a probable quarterfinal clash with Alcaraz looms.

Result: Djokovic to win in four sets.
