Sumit Nagal lost to Thomas Machac in straight sets.
The forerunners of the Indian contingent at Australian Open 2025 suffered disappointing first-round defeats. Sumit Nagal, the country’s lone hope in the singles draw was comprehensively beaten by 26th seed, Thomas Machac in straight sets.
While the Czech was ruling the roost in the first two sets, the Indian was a break ahead in the third but Machac eventually broke back, when Nagal was serving for the set. Last year, Nagal advanced to the second round, stunning Alexander Bublik in round one. However, he was unable to force an upset this time around.
Meanwhile, the defending champion from the men’s doubles arena, Rohan Bopanna was upset in the very first round by an unseeded pair. In the absence of his regular partner, Mathew Ebden (the pair has now parted ways), the Indian veteran took the court alongside Nicolás Barrientos, but the Colombian’s inconsistency and poor shot selection at pivotal instances, cost the Bangalorean dearly.
Bopanna’s title defence hopes were cut short and this early exit calls for serious retrospection. On that note, let’s take a look at the prize money both players will earn following their disappointing outing Down-Under.
Breakdown of prize money earned
This year at the Australian Open, the marquee event’s prize pool has been further bolstered by adding higher incentives to the competition. As per the ATP Tour’s official website, the 2025 AO has announced a total prize pool of AUD 96.5 million (USD 60.29 million), marking a 12% increase from last year.
Players will see their earnings increase at each stage of the tournament. Both men’s and women’s singles champions will get AUD 3.5 million (USD 2.19 million) for winning the title. However, with prize money accumulating throughout each round, their total earnings could soar to an impressive AUD 8.2 million (USD 5.13 million).
The winner of the men’s singles event of the Australian Open 2025 will earn a stunning 3,500,000 USD, while the runner-up takes home an equally impressive 2,190,000 USD.
The 26-year-old Indian star lost to Czech Republic’s Tomas Machac, 3-6, 6-1, 5-7 at Melbourne Park. Inspite of crashing out in the very first round of the 2025 Australian Open, Sumit Nagal earned 85,800 USD (approximately ₹70 lakh INR). This significant prize money highlights the level of competition and the challenges of competing at the highest level.
Rohan Bopanna and his partner Nicolás Barrientos were beaten by the Spanish pairing of Pedro MartĂnez and Jaume Munar within 75 minutes, with the scoreline reading 7-5 7-6. As a result of this round one loss, Bopanna will take home 40,000 USD (approximately 33.2 lakh). The champion and runner-up of the 2025 Australian Open men’s doubles event will earn a massive $810,000 USD and $440,000 USD respectively.
