Fritz will have an eye on the Norman Brookes Challenge Cup after a fruitful 2024 season.

Fourth seed Taylor Fritz has had an easy time in Melbourne thus far, virtually untroubled in the opening two rounds. Fritz dropped only eight games in his wins over countryman Jenson Brooksby and unseeded Chilean Cristian Garín. The World No. #4 scored his 6-2, 6-1, 6-0 victory over Garin in just 72 minutes.

Only Rafael Nadal (4) and Roger Federer (6) have dropped fewer games than Taylor Fritz (8) before the third round at the venue since 1988 when the Australian Open moved to Melbourne Park.

Fritz will face off against 38-year-old veteran Gael Monfils. In Monfils, Fritz has a crafty opponent who outlasted a much younger Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard. After outlasting Perricard in a marathon five-setter, Monfils eased past Daniel Altmaier, 7-5, 6-3, 7-6(3), in 2 hours and 19 minutes courtside.

Heading into the clash with Monfils, Fritz does so as the top-ranked American after a stellar 2024 season that saw him make the US Open finals as well as the title round of the year-ending ATP Finals held in Turin.

Monfils arrived in Melbourne after ending a title drought extending back to 2023. The Frenchman won the ASB Classic in Auckland with a straight-set win over Zizou Bergs.

Preview

Fritz’s reward for the extraordinary 2024 season was a career-high of No. #4 in the ATP rankings and a return to the top five after he first broke through in March 2023. Fritz is the 17th American to make to the top four since the inception of the ATP ranking system in 1973.

The 27-year-old faces the 38-year-old Monfils for a chance to progress to the fourth round. Either Fritz or Monfils could find themselves taking on Ben Shelton for a place in the last eight. Fritz made the last eight last season, while Monfils is a two-time quarterfinalist in Melbourne (2016, 2022).

Both Fritz and Monfils were impressive in their second-round wins over their respective opponents. Fritz returned with 24 winners and won seven of nine breakpoints. Monfils scored 37 winners and fired 12 aces en route to his victory over Altmaier.

Monfils would have preferred making fewer than the eight double faults he ended up with to his name. It could push him onto the back foot and hamper his chances of making another last-eight appearance.

After their respective second-round wins, Fritz and Monfils lead the race to Turin in that order.

Match prediction

Taylor Fritz is a genuine Grand Slam contender after making the finals in New York last season. Though he lost out on the title, he became the first American finalist at the venue since Andy Roddick in 2006.

Fritz has yet to drop a set at this year’s Australian Open. The American dominated Garin, winning 80% of points on his first serve. In his effort to do one better than the 2024 quarter-finals, Fritz will be up against Gael Monfils. The Frenchman won’t fold over and is on a high after winning the ASB Classic in New Zealand.

The veteran campaigner will bring his athleticism and flair to the court against against Frtiz. The American is at home on hard courts, and his baseline game makes him a tough customer on the surface. Fritz heads into the face-off with Monfils with a head-to-head advantage and is favoured to win.

Result: Taylor Fritz to win in four sets.
