The Argentine broke Perricard once in each set, even as the tall Frenchman’s unforced errors (38) piled up to nullify the 20 winners against his name. The 24-year-old Navone needed only 84 minutes to wrap up the 6-4, 6-4 win against Perricard.

Preview

Shelton and Navone have a similar record in the Spanish capital and have yet to progress beyond the first week at the Madrid Open ATP 1000. 

The American, who climbed to World No. 13 this week, would like to build on his strong showing in Munich and deliver his first Masters win of his career. To do that, Shelton will have to work on his poor 2-6 record on the clay-court ATP 1000.

In contrast, Navone can claim a slight edge with a 3-3 win-loss record in clay-court Masters events, including qualifying rounds. Navone, who made his Madrid Open main draw season in 2024, defeated Alexei Popyrin 7-5, 6-2 in the opening round.

He went down fighting to No. 12 seed Holger Rune 7-5, 67(2), 4-6 in the second round. The Argentine showcased his abilities on clay when he reached the two finals on the surface in 2024 at Bucharest and Rio.
