Iga Swiatek has not been in action since her defeat in US Open quarterfinals.
Iga Swiatek has made public her decision to play as part of the Polish line-up at Billie Jean Cup 2024. The decision to sign up for the event was made on the social media platform X, on Swiatek’s official account.
The 2024 Billie Jean King Cup Finals will take place in Malaga between November 13-20. The Martin Carpena Arena in Malaga will host the event after it was relocated from nearby Sevilla and will take place alongside the men’s Davis Cup Finals event.
A total of 12 nations will compete in a knockout competition for the privilege of being crowned world champion.
The 23-year-old will compete alongside Magdalena Frech, Magda Linette, Maja Chwalinska and Katarzyna Kawa. Swiatek has not played since losing to the US Open runner-up, Jessica Pegula, in the quarterfinals in September.
The 2024 Billie Jean King Cup Finals line-up includes Jessica Pegula, Leylah Fernandez and Paula Badosa. Fernandez will carry the weight of her team’s expectations as she spearheads Canada’s defence of their 2023 win. Naomi Osaka was due to take part, but following her injury has withdrawn from the team event.
World No. #5 Jasmine Paolini leads 2023 runner-up Italy in a line-up that includes Sara Errani. The duo won the women’s doubles Olympic gold medal in Paris this year.
Canada, the world champions and Italy, the runners-up from the 2023 edition, hosts Spain, and wild card Czechia have qualified automatically. The winners of the 2024 qualifiers – Australia, Germany, Great Britain, Japan, Poland, Romania, Slovakia and the USA, will join them in the knockout stage.
Poland to open against Spain
Poland is slated to take on Spain in the first tie of the 2024 Billie Jean King Cup when it gets underway on November 13. Swiatek will lend her firepower to the Polish squad, and we will have a match on our hands when the two sides clash. Should the Pole play a singles tie, she’s likely to face Spain’s Paula Badosa in a meeting that will most certainly be a treat for the fans.
Spain has won the Billie Jean Cup five times since 1991 when they first lifted the trophy. Their longest streak was between 1993 and 1995, with three consecutive wins.
The United States has won the Billie Jean King Cup a record 18 times, with the Czech Republic following with 11 titles in second place. Defending champions Canada lifted the trophy for the first time last year, while runner-up Italy took the win on four occasions.
Round one runs from November 13-15, followed by the quarterfinals between November 16-17. The semi-finals are scheduled for November 18-19, followed by the grand finale on November 20.
