USA was the first nation to win more than 10 Billie Jean King Cup titles.

The Billie Jean King Cup (or the BJK Cup) began life as the Federation Cup in 1963. It transitioned to the Fed Cup in 1995 and, in September 2020, took on the name Billie Jean King Cup in honour of former World No. 1 Billie Jean King. The rebranding recognises Billie Jean King’s achievements as a player and role model who fought for equality in women’s sports.

Billie Jean King Cup is the biggest women’s team event in tennis and is held every year in different locations. It is similiar to the men’s Davis Cup as the top players from all over the globe compete for their respective nations. Initially featuring only a handful of countries, it has grown into a global competition with more than 100 nations participating.

The format of the Billie Jean King Cup is similar to that of the men’s Davis Cup, with teams competing in a series of singles and doubles matches based on world group and regional zones. Nations are divided into different groups based on rankings and compete in a series of ties, or matches, to advance through the rounds.

Throughout the season, nations engage in ties – best-of-three matches consisting of singles and doubles. The Billie Jean King Cup then progresses to the final round where the top teams vie for the championship title, creating intense competition and showcasing legendary performances.

The tournament has created unforgettable moments over the years, with powerhouse teams such as the United States, the Czech Republic, and Australia achieving historical success. Players like Serena Williams, Martina Navratilova, and Maria Sharapova have brought their skills to the Billie Jean King Cup, lending the competition an unparalleled level of talent and prestige.

For many players especially youngsters representing their country in the event marks a pivotal moment of their career as they compete alongside their teammates. The players are led by a captain who could be a former player, renowned coach or a celebrated representative of the sport.

In the first few decades of the event, the United States emerged as the most successful team, winning multiple titles. Players such as Billie Jean King, who was instrumental in both the creation of the tournament and its success, helped establish the U.S. as a powerhouse.

King’s leadership on the court, along with her teammates, including tennis greats like Margaret Court, helped solidify America’s early dominance in the tournament. The U.S. continued to perform at the highest level throughout the 1960s and 1970s, capturing numerous titles. They were the first nation win more than 10 titles.

Australia, too, played a pivotal role in the early years of the tournament, often rivaling the United States for dominance. With a tradition of producing top-tier female tennis players, including the likes of Evonne Goolagong Cawley and Margaret Court, Australia became one of the most formidable teams in the event.

The country’s strong team spirit and competitive drive helped them secure several titles in the 1960s and 1970s, placing them in direct competition with the U.S. for supremacy in women’s tennis.

Presenting the roll call of champions who have the Billie Jean King trophy over the years.
