Boris Becker guided Novak Djokovic to his maiden French Open title in 2016.

Former German tennis player Boris Becker has claimed that we would never bet against Novak Djokovic because everyone who has played against the 24-time Grand Slam champion has lost a significant amount of money over the last 20 years.

Additionally, the six-time Grand Slam champion also believes that the Serbian tennis star would win his 25th Grand Slam despite the last eight major titles being equally divided between Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner. During his recent interview with The Guardian, Boris Becker discussed his past life and his time in prison.

In April 2022, Becker was found guilty of failing to declare all his assets during his insolvency. It was stated that he did so in order to distribute additional funds to his creditors.

As a result, he was sentenced to a two-and-a-half-year jail term. In the interview, he also mentioned watching the Serbian tennis star play in the 2022 Wimbledon final against Nick Kyrgios on a small television from his prison cell.

He said, “I wasn’t afraid any more. And when Novak won, and raised his arms, I stood up and raised my arms too. As I did so, the noise along the wing broke out again, louder than ever before.

The banging didn’t stop for 10 minutes. On walls, on doors. With cups, with chairs. It had taken me two weeks to educate them that this was my man, and now I realised. They had understood. I stood there and I cried.”

Later, he was quizzed about Djokovic’s chances of winning a record-breaking 25th Grand Slam title in the future. To which the Serb’s former coach said, “Whoever was playing against Novak Djokovic lost a lot of money for the last 20 years. So I’d never bet against Novak.”

Boris Becker worked as Djokovic’s coach between 2014 and 2016. During the period, the Serbian tennis star won six Grand Slam titles and 14 Masters 1000 titles.

The former German tennis star also guided Novak Djokovic to his maiden French Open title in 2016. Interestingly, the French Open is the only Grand Slam that Becker also never won in his professional career.

Becker won six Grand Slam titles in his career. His first major title came at the Wimbledon Championships in 1985, becoming the youngest player to win the SW19 title in history.

He later defended his crown in 1986 and won his third title in 1989. His other major titles came in Flushing Meadows in 1989, the Australian Open in 1991, and Melbourne again in 1996.

Why did Boris Becker say he would “never bet against Novak Djokovic”?

Becker explained that almost anyone who has bet against Djokovic over the past 20 years has “lost a lot of money,” highlighting the Serb’s unmatched consistency and dominance.

What was Becker’s connection to Djokovic?

Becker coached Djokovic from 2014 to 2016. During that time, Djokovic won six Grand Slam titles and fourteen Masters 1000 titles.

Why was Boris Becker in prison?

In 2022, he was found guilty of failing to declare assets during his insolvency and was sentenced to two and a half years.

Did Becker ever win the French Open as a player?

The French Open is the only Grand Slam he did not win, which made helping Djokovic win it in 2016 especially meaningful.
