Aryna Sabalenka defeated Polina Kudermetova to kickstart her season with a title win at Brisbane International 2025.

World Number One, Aryna Sabalenka, kickstarted the 2025 calendar year with a victory in Brisbane International, winning her first-ever title at the WTA 500 event. Entering the tournament as the strong favourite, the Belarusian lived up to the expectations, to claim her 17th singles title.

Sabalenka faced Yulia Putintseva in the round of 16, Marie Bouzkova in the quarterfinals and Mirra Andreeva in the semis. However, none of them managed to challenge the hard hitting 26-year-old as she cruised through all her matches without dropping a set so far.

Things were slightly different in the finals, as the 21-year-old Polina Kudermetova made the top seed work hard for the triumph. It has been a phenomenal journey for the Russian, who had to battle it out in the qualifiers and eventually, ended up advancing to her first ever WTA final.

The Russian quickly put Sabalenka under pressure by taking the first set, but the Belarusian’s experience on the big stage proved invaluable. Staying composed, the 26-year-old kept her nerve and orchestrated a brilliant comeback, ultimately winning the match in three sets.

The total prize pool at the Brisbane International, is $1,520,600, an enticing amount up for grabs for the players. As the champion of the Brisbane International 2025 competition, Aryna Sabalenka will receive a prize money of $192,475 for her exploits.

Polina Kudermetova, the runner-up of the 2025 Brisbane tournament, playing in her maiden WTA Final is set to receive a handsome cash prize of $120,375. The Russian’s inspiring journey from qualification to the finale of the competition will motivate youngsters to put in the hard yards for a bright future.

Mirra Andreeva and Anhelina Kalinina, semi-finalists of the event, who were eliminated by Sabalenka and Kudermetova respectively will each pocket $69,650. The quarterfinalists of the competition—Ons Jabeur, Kimberly Birrell, Ashlyn Krueger and Marie Bouzkova, will each fetch $35,000.

The players who were eliminated in the second round will be awarded $17,500 while those beaten in the first round will receive $12,300.

The title victory must be incredibly satisfying for Aryna Sabalenka, especially after coming up short last year when she lost to Elena Rybakina in the final. This magnificent triumph will undoubtedly skyrocket Sabalenka’s confidence, as she will now hope to carry this stellar form into the Australian Open, where she will defend her crown as the reigning champion.
