Taylor Fritz will face Russia’s Andrey Rublev in the quarterfinals in Montreal.
By advancing to the quarterfinals of the ongoing 2025 ATP Canadian Open, Taylor Fritz has ticked a new milestone on Sunday. The American defeated Czech player Jiri Lehecka with a hard-fought 7-6(4), 6-7(5), 7-6(5) victory in the fourth round.
With this win, the world number 4 became the first American man to reach the quarter-finals at all nine ATP Masters 1000 events since the series was established in 1990.
Before this year, Fritz had reached the quarter-finals of every ATP Masters 1000 event except for Montreal. Here, the top-ranked American had fallen in the round of 16 twice, in 2022 and 2023. Last year, he was knocked out in the round of 32, losing to fellow American Sebastian Korda.
Speaking of other American tennis greats like Pete Sampras, Andre Agassi and Andy Roddick, all came close but each fell short at Monte Carlo. Meanwhile, the other American great Jim Courier only won at Indian Wells, Miami and Rome.
Now, Taylor Fritz has broken that pattern, becoming the first American man to reach quarter-finals in all nine events. The 27-year-old is still chasing his maiden Grand Slam title, though he came close at the 2024 US Open, reaching the final before falling to current World No. 1 Jannik Sinner.

Fritz will face Russian star Andrey Rublev in the quarter-finals in Montreal on Wednesday, August 6.
His journey in this campaign has been spectacular, reaching the last eight without dropping a set in the earlier rounds. He defeated Roberto Carballes Baena 7-5, 7-6 in the round of 64, followed by a 6-4, 6-2 win over Canadian Gabriel Diallo in the round of 32.
