Carlos Alcaraz narrowly missed out on the Paris Olympics gold as he lost to Novak Djokovic.

Carlos Alcaraz had a great first half of the year 2024 as he went on to become the youngest player to win the Channel Slam. It includes winning the French Open and Wimbledon titles in the same year. Including Carlos Alcaraz, only six tennis greats have managed the feat. However, the Spanish tennis ace hasn’t been able to follow up the great start in the previous few months, as he seems to be falling behind the likes of Jannik Sinner.

The China Open win could not have come at a better time for the World No. 2, as he looks to regain the top spot from the Italian before heading into the ATP Finals. Apart from the season-ending event, Carlos Alcaraz will also feature at the Davis Cup Finals in November 2024.

Indian Wells

The “fifth Grand Slam,” as it is often referred to owing to its large popularity among the fans and the largest outside of the four Grand Slams, the Indian Wells Open is one of the nine titles in the ATP Masters Series. Founded in 1974, Indian Wells is played at the Indian Wells Tennis Stadium, the world’s second-largest permanent tennis stadium, after the US Open’s Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York.

Carlos Alcaraz dropped only two sets on his way to win the title, getting the better of the likes of Alexander Zverev, Jannik Sinner and Daniil Medvedev in the quarter-finals, semi-finals and the finals of the tournament. He also faced Felix Auger-Aliassime in one of the earlier rounds. As difficult as it sounds getting past these four, Alcaraz made it look easy as he dropped a set only against the current World No. 1 Sinner. As he got the better of Zverev in the quarter-finals, Alcaraz avenged his Australian Open quarter-finals loss against the German.

French Open

Carlos Alcaraz overcame the disappointing semi-final exit from Roland-Garros 2023 by winning the 2024 edition, his first French Open title. However, the win at Stade Roland Garros in Paris wasn’t as rosy as the one in California. The Spaniard had to sweat it out, especially in the semi-final and the final against Sinner and Zverev respectively. He also played Greek ace Stefanos Tsitsipas and Canadian Aliassime on his route to the finals.

Alcaraz and Sinner exchanged sets twice before the Spaniard took the decider in the semi-finals with the scoreline 2-6, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, and 6-3. In the final, Zverev made a comeback after going a set down. However, he was no match for Alcaraz’s high-intensity game, as the Spaniard won the next two sets to lift the title. The score read 6-3, 2-6, 5-7, 6-1 and 6-2.

Wimbledon

Alcaraz then won Wimbledon in July, thus completing the Channel Slam for the year, as aforementioned. This was the second consecutive Wimbledon title for the former World No.1. Wimbledon had perhaps the toughest ride for the 21-year-old, as he had to play four top 20 players en route to the final.

The final of the tournament was a repeat of the 2023 edition where Alcaraz played Novak Djokovic. However, this time, Alcaraz didn’t let Djokovic take the match to five sets. Alcaraz won in straight sets with the scoreboard reading 6-2, 6-2, 7-6(4).

China Open

The fourth and his first ATP 500 title of the year for Alcaraz came in October 2024 when he won the China Open. The tournament saw Alcaraz back to his dazzling best after having nearly missed out on the Paris Olympics, where he lost to Novak Djokovic in the final.

The 21-year-old did not drop a set until the tournament’s final, where he narrowly lost the opening set to top seed Sinner. The Spanish World No 2 won the next two sets to take the match 6-7 (6), 6-4, and 7-6 (3). Alcaraz became the first player to win ATP 500 titles on all three surfaces.
