Carlos Alcaraz is set to face Zizou Bergs in the second round.
After his Laver Cup 2025 defeat, Spanish sensation Carlos Alcaraz kicked off his Asian swing at the Japan Open 2025 with a straight-sets victory over Argentina’s Sebastian Baez 6-4, 6-2. However, his Tokyo debut was overshadowed by a dramatic mid-match fall and an ankle injury scare.
The incident occurred in the fifth game of the first set with the score level at 2-2. While chasing a ball, Alcaraz rolled his left ankle and collapsed in pain. The 22-year-old remained on the ground for a few moments, clutching his ankle
Then the Spaniard required a medical timeout, during which his ankle was heavily strapped by the Physio. He returned into action and despite the apparent discomfort, he managed to break Baez’s serve to lead 5-4.
But, the luck going in favour saw rain pouring down the roof and forcing it to close, giving Carlos some valuable recovery time.
As the game resumed, fans witnessed a sharper and more mobile Alcaraz who reasserted control, sealing the opener before racing through the second set to advance, all while battling with the injury.
