Carlos Alcaraz finishes 2025 with a 4-2 advantage over Sinner in their head-to-head
The rivalry between Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, now in its fifth year on the ATP Tour, has kicked up a notch, with intriguing edge-of-the-seat clashes and nothing less than a last-minute scramble to finish the year ranked as the ATP No. 1.
Their head-to-head rivalry has now extended to 16 matches, with six played in 2025 alone, all in the championship round. Prior to the season-ending finale, they crossed paths in two ATP 1000 finals and three of the four Grand Slam finals.
Sinner began the year as World No. 1, but by the end, it was Alcaraz who finished as the year-ending No. 1 for the second time. The Italian and the Spaniard split the Grand Slams between them.
Sinner bounced back from a three-month absence to finish with six tour-level titles, while Alcaraz claimed eight titles for his best season yet.
The duo split their head-to-head matches 4-2 in Alcaraz’s favour. The World No. 1 swept Sinner away in 2024, winning all three of their battles last season.

Alcaraz has 14 big titles to his name – 6 Grand Slams and 8 ATP 1000 events. Sinner has won 4 Grand Slams, 5 ATP 1000 events and 2 year-ending ATP Finals.
Below is a full breakdown of their encounters in the 2025 season, which ended with both having won 24 titles each:
ATP Masters 1000 Rome
The Carlos Alcaraz – Jannik Sinner meeting in Rome was their first summit clash at an ATP 1000 tournament. Sinner was keen to become the first Italian since Adriano Panatta in 1976 to win on home turf. Sinner was competing as the World No. 1.
Alcaraz had other plans, denying Sinner the 2025 Italian Open title with a 7-6(5), 6-1 victory – his fourth straight against the Italian and halting his rival’s 26-match winning streak.
Roland Garros
The 2025 Roland Garros title round raised the bar as a determined Carlos Alcaraz stunned Jannik Sinner in an epic final. The Spaniard pulled off a Houdini act, rallying from two sets down to defend his crown.
During the five-hour and 29-minute nail-biter, Alcaraz faced three match points at 3-5 and 0-40 in the fourth set. The No. 2 seed authored a spectacular comeback and scripted the unlikeliest of victories, 4-6, 6-7(4), 6-4, 7-6(3), 7-6(2).
Alcaraz’s victory in Paris made him the first player since compatriot Rafael Nadal in 2012 to sweep Monte-Carlo, Rome and Roland Garros in the same season.
Wimbledon
Wimbledon 2025 was Jannik Sinner’s turn to score an upset and turn the tables on Carlos Alcaraz, who was now a five-time Grand Slam champion. The Italian rallied from a set down for a clinical 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 victory, devoid of the drama witnessed in Paris.
By dethroning Alcaraz as the reigning SW19 champion, Sinner entered the record books as the first Italian to lay his hands on the Wimbledon trophy. For the Italian, only the Roland Garros trophy is missing from his collection, one he very nearly had before it was snatched away by Alcaraz.
ATP Masters 1000 Cincinnati
The Masters 1000 final in Cincinnati was an anti-climax considering their engrossing rivalry thus far. Jannik Sinner, affected by an illness, was unable to continue while trailing 5-0 in the opening set.
The forced retirement handed Alcaraz his first Cincinnati Masters 1000 title – his third Masters 1000 title of the season after Monte-Carlo and Rome, and eighth overall. The Spaniard completed his collection of ATP 1000 events in the United States, having won at Indian Wells (2023, 2024) and Miami (2022).
US Open
The title round at the 2025 US Open saw Carlos Alcaraz finish the Grand Slam season on a high note. The soon-to-be World No. 1 gave the Italian a taste of his own medicine with a straightforward 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 win to claim the title on Arthur Ashe.
Winning in New York was the ideal revenge story for Alcaraz. The Spaniard dethroned the US Open defending champion in four sets to settle scores with Sinner for Wimbledon 2025.
It was his sixth Grand Slam title and second in New York. Following his title run at Flushing Meadows, Alcaraz also stole the No. 1 ranking from Sinner to deal a double blow to the Italian.
ATP Finals
Jannik Sinner crossed paths with his nemesis, Carlos Alcaraz, for one last time in the 2025 season, at the year-ending ATP Finals. On this occasion, the Italian had the last laugh, ending Alcaraz’s hopes of a maiden ATP Finals title with a straight set win, 7-6(4), 7-5.
Both players had arrived in the championship having gone undefeated. The Italian emerged victorious on home turf to win back-to-back ATP Finals titles without dropping a set.
The 24-year-old Sinner became only the fourth man this century to win two in a row at the season finale following his flawless performance in Turin.
