Alcaraz denied Novak Djokovic his 25th Grand Slam major.
Carlos Alcaraz was crowned the men’s singles Australian Open 2026 winner for the first time, as he outlasted Novak Djokovic for a third time in a Grand Slam final, to become the youngest-ever male player to complete a career slam.
The Serbian came out all guns blazing at the start of the match and claimed the opening set 6-2. However, Djokovic’s level dropped significantly thereafter, and Alcaraz made early inroads in the second set. An early break, followed by break points saved at 2-1, helped him run away with the set.

Djokovic no longer had the same energy on the serve, and his overall body language was below-par. He ended up losing both second and third sets, and had too much to do eventually.
While Djokovic staved off an early break in the fourth set, Alcaraz held firm on serve under relentless pressure. After a prolonged exchange of holds, the Spaniard finally broke at 6-5, 15-40 to seal the set and his maiden Australian Open title in Melbourne.
Djokovic was handed his first defeat by Alcaraz in an Australian Open final, with the Serbian’s flawless record of 10-0 in finals at the Melbourne Park finally coming to an end. Arguably his best chance to get his hands on the silverware went begging for the 38-year-old.

The contest ultimately was shaped by Djokovic’s fitness and his inability to reproduce back-to-back exceptional performances, which is understandable given his age.
Despite two walkovers, the Serbian had to put his body on the line in beating two-time defending champion Jannik Sinner in the semi-finals, and he was unable to produce the same level again in the championship match.
For Alcaraz, it marked his seventh Grand Slam title, an extraordinary achievement at just 22 years old. With this triumph, the Spaniard further consolidates his status as the World No. 1.
