Daniil Medvedev beat Carlos Alcaraz in their first-ever career meeting at Wimbledon.

While Carlos Alcaraz and Daniil Medvedev have enjoyed a fair amount of success on the ATP Tour, like any other sportspersons, they have had to deal with fluctuations in form and fortune on court.

Carlos Alcaraz’s breakthrough year came in 2022, just a year after his debut. The Spaniard went on to claim 11 titles over the next two seasons — five in 2022 and six in 2023. Alcaraz’s milestones included becoming the youngest and first teenage World No. #1 and year-end No. #1 since ATP rankings were first published in 1973. He ascended to the top spot at age 19 in September 2022.

When Alcaraz beat Casper Ruud in the 2022 US Open final, he was crowned the youngest men’s champion at the US Open since Pete Sampras in 1990. Alcaraz has gone on to add more feathers to his cap. He went on to add the 2023 Wimbledon and the 2024 French Open trophies to his collection.

After his Roland Garros triumph, the Spaniard, at 21 years and 35 days, became the youngest player in the Open Era to win men’s singles titles at three different Grand Slam events.

Medvedev fell out of the top 10 of the ATP Rankings in January 2023 for the first time since August 2019. He clawed his way back into the top 10 by the middle of March 2023 with back-to-back wins at Rotterdam, Doha and Dubai. The Russian also went on to win pick-up wins at ATP 1000 events in Miami and Rome.

What followed for Medvedev is a year without a title despite making three more finals in the 2023 season. Russian went on to reach the title rounds in New York, Beijing and Vienna, besides the semifinals at Turin.

In 2024, he reached the finals at Melbourne and Indian Wells, losing in both to Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz. Another dip in form following his semi-final loss to Jannik Sinner at the 2024 ATP Masters in Miami saw Medvedev exit the ATP top five.

The 2022 US Open dinner did not reach the quarterfinal stage since retiring in the quarterfinals of the Madrid Masters until the Wimbledon 2024. Medvedev has not able to deliver the results in the championhsip matches as he falters in the final hurdle.
