Alcaraz and Cerundolo headed for a second ATP Masters 1000 showdown of the season.

Carlos Alcaraz and Francisco Cerundolo are all set to clash in their second successive ATP 1000 meeting of the year. The Spaniard prevailed in their quarter-final face-off at Indian Wells, winning 6-3 7-6(4) to go up 2-0 in tour-level matches.

Carlos Alcaraz will look for a return to his winning ways after an early exit in Miami. Despite the second-round loss to David Goffin in Florida, Alcaraz is a respectable 4-2 in Masters events this season. He made the last four stages at Indian Wells before a loss to Jack Draper denied him a shot at a third straight Indian Wells Open title.

Cerundolo, currently ranked world No. 22, made short of work of Fabio Fognini, 6-0, 6-3 in just 62 minutes. It was the first tour-level meeting between the Argentine and the Italian wildcard. The 37-year-old Fognini was the Monte Carlo champion in 2019 and this was his 14th main draw appearance at the event.

It was an easy win for Cerundolo, who won 81% of his first serve points and converted five breakpoints en route to his seventh ATP 1000 match win this season. The Argentine is 7-2 at the ATP 1000 level this season as he heads into the second-round meeting with Alcaraz.

Preview

Alcaraz will look to make a significant leap in the ATP rankings as he sat out the Monte Carlo Masters last season. But the path to the trophy will not be easy for the World No. 3.

The Spaniard’s section includes 2019 champion Andrey Rublev, Indian Wells winner Jack Draper and Gael Monfils. Draper narrowed the gap with Alcaraz to 3-2 in their head-to-head after he won their semi-final match at last month’s Indian Wells Open.

Should Alcaraz progress past Draper, he is seeded to meet Rublev in the last eight. Rublev, the seventh seed in Monte Carlo, signed up former World No. 1 Marat Safin to be a part of his coaching team. The Russian is a noteworthy 11-6 at the ATP 1000 event and is 1-0 on clay against the Spaniard.

Match Prediction

While Alcaraz is a solid clay court player, he has yet to play a match on the surface a little over three months into the new season. His second-round rival, Cerundolo, is 9-3 on the surface, including his opening-round win in Monte-Carlo.

The Argentine accounted for World No. 2 Alexander Zverev in Buenos Aires before making the title round at home. Cerundolo reached the last eight in Rio and the last four in Santiago, where both tournaments were played on clay.

Despite being more proficient on clay, Alcaraz has won more trophies at Masters events played on hard courts. His titles at Indian Wells (3) outnumber those from Madrid (2). He last played in Monte Carlo in 2022 as well, where he lost in the opening round to Seb Korda.

Cerundolo also defeated Tommy Paul and Casper Ruud in Miami to establish his credentials as a clay-court specialist. He stretched Alcaraz to a second-set tie-break recently at Indian Wells.

Result: Cerundolo will win in three sets.
