Alcaraz has been battling injury that sidelined him from Madrid Open last month.

Carlos Alcaraz leads the men’s tour with 25 match wins after a 6-3, 6-3 victory against Dusan Lajovic at the Italian Open 2025 on Friday. It was a straightforward win for the Spaniard as he wrapped up the straight sets win in one hour and 22 minutes.

Alcaraz now faces Lajovic’s countryman Laslo Djere for a second time this season in the third round. The 22-year-old looks to have fully recovered from the injury that sidelined him from the Madrid Open last month. The Spaniard struck 24 winners as he outclassed Lajovic to lead 5-0 in their head-to-head.

Laslo Djere got the better of Alex Michelsen 6-0, 6-3 in a rough opening week for Americans in Rome. Michelsen, the winner at Estoril, joined Taylor Fritz, Ben Shelton, and France Tiafoe, who also made second-round exits.

Match details

Tournament: Italian Open 2025

Round: Third round

Date: May 12

Venue: Foro Italico, Rome, Italy

Surface: Clay

Preview

Alcaraz, the third seed, will be aiming for his second ATP 1000 title after Monte Carlo. The Spaniard is first in the Live Race to Turin. He did not play in Rome last year due to injury and starts this fortnight with a clean slate. The World No #3 leads Jack Draper and Alexander Zverev, who are second and third on the list.

The Spaniard looks to have brushed off the setback in the Barcelona Open finals, where he lost to Holger Rune. Having won the Monte Carlo Masters in April, the Italian Open is the only clay-court ATP 1000 title missing from his collection. His No #3 seeding leaves him on a collision course with either fifth-seed Jack Draper or ninth-seed Holger Rune in the last eight.

Djere, the 29-year-old Serbian, was a winner at the Chile Open in Santiago. His victory at the ATP 250 event in February was his first since 2020. He has been reasonably competitive on clay this season with a 12-3 record on the surface, including his two wins at the ongoing Italian Open.

The Serbian is yet to drop a set or face a tie-break as he took down Tomas Martin Etcheverry and Alex Michelsen in straight sets, taking less than 90 minutes to defeat both players.

Match Prediction

Alcaraz heads into his third-round match against Djere with the benefit of hindsight, having overcome the Serbian in both their matches. The duo has played both their head-to-head matches on clay, arguably Alcaraz’s favourite surface.

Despite 2025 marking only his second visit to Rome, Alcaraz has well-established clay court credentials. His maiden win in Monte-Carlo is a testament to that fact. A slightly rusty Alcaraz made 24 unforced errors en route to his win over Dusan Lajovic in the first round, something he will have to be mindful of as the competition intensifies in the later stages of the ATP 1000 event.

With Jannik Sinner back in the fray, Alcaraz will have to battle it out on two fronts, fight to regain the No #2 spot from Alexander Zverev and close the gap with the Italian World No #1 in the ATP Rankings.

But for now, there is little Laslo Djere can do to prevent another win by Alcaraz. Having won 10 of 11 matches played on clay this season, including 20 of 23 sets during the same period, Alcaraz is all but guaranteed to improve on his third-round performance in the Italian capital.

Result: Alcaraz to win in straight sets.
