Next up for Alcaraz is the No. 32 seed and the second Italian opponent in a row – Luciano Darderi. Darderi is a relative newcomer to New York, having just played one US Open main draw. The Italian made his debut at the 2024 US Open, where he lost to Sebastian Baez in the opening round.

Darderi wasted no time in getting started in his second-round match against American wildcard Eliot Spizzirri, racing to a one-set lead in just 19 minutes.

Following a close second-set tie-breaker, Sprizzi pegged Darderi back to take the third by dropping just two games. The Italian sealed the outcome in his favour by breaking the American’s serve on his first match point. The final scoreline read 6-0, 7-6(3), 2-6, 6-4 after two hours and 35 minutes on Court 12.

Carlos Alcaraz had an easy outing against Mattia Bellucci, who was playing under the bright lights of the Arthur Ashe Stadium for the first time. Bellucci quickly found himself two breaks down as Alcaraz raced to a 5-0 victory, to make a second-round exit in a repeat of his result from the 2024 edition of the US Open.

​Darderi, like fellow Italian Mattia Bellucci, is making his second main draw appearance at the US Open. His best performance at a major came when he made the third round at Wimbledon 2025, where he lost to Australian Jordan Thompson.

However, the 2025 season has seen the Italian win three tour-level titles. The tournament wins materialised at Marrakech, Bastad, and Umag.
