Carlos Alcaraz stretches his win streak in Tokyo to 6-0.

Carlos Alcaraz‘s title defence in Tokyo got off to a rocky start, with the Spaniard delivering a scrappy three-set win over American Alex Michelsen during the ATP Japan Open 2026. Alcaraz beat Michelsen 7-6(1), 4-6, 6-1 in their maiden tour-level clash to move into the second round.

The 23-year-old from Murcia is seeking his third title of the season and is currently on a six-match winning streak in the Japanese capital. Michelsen produced a spirited display, converting five break-point opportunities against the World No. 3 before levelling the match at a set apiece.

Alcaraz raised his level in the decider and comfortably sealed the victory, wrapping up a two-hour, 31-minute win.

Italian Matteo Arnaldi awaits the seven-time Grand Slam champion in the next round. Arnaldi fought back from a set down to overcome Japanese wildcard Rei Sakamoto 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 in two hours and eight minutes.

Arnaldi, 25, is in the pre-quarterfinals in Tokyo for the first time in his third visit here. He lost to Tommy Paul in the opening round in 2024 and could not make it past qualifying in 2025. Arnaldi will face Alcaraz for the third time and enters the clash down 2-0 in their head-to-head record.

Their most recent meeting came at the 2024 Indian Wells Masters, where the Italian surrendered the opening set before falling 6-7(5), 6-0, 6-1. Alcaraz had also beaten Arnaldi in the 2023 US Open pre-quarters.
