Coco Gauff and Jasmine Paolini moved into the quarter-finals of Stuttgart in contrasting fashion. Gauff’s 6-1, 6-1 win over Ella Siedel took only 57 minutes and tied with her best result at the venue – her quarter-final result from last season.

The American will now play her first quarter-final since the Australian Open in January. Coco Gauff saved all three break points faced and converted five to secure her maiden win over Siedel.   

Jasmine Paolini was kept on court for 30 minutes longer as unseeded German Jule Niemeier threatened to take the match into a decider. After winning the first set easily, the Italian player offered some resistance in the second set as well. However, the German was let down by her six double faults and lost on serve five times. 

The German could break Paolini only twice as she lost to the Italian for the third time in her career, with the scoreline reading 6-1, 7-5 after 86 minutes of game time.

Preview

Gauff and Paolini, seeds fourth and fifth, will battle for a place in the last four in Stuttgart. The pair will be making their second appearance in eight rounds at the venue. Gauff lost to Marta Kostyuk in her quarter-final match last season, while Paolini fell to eventual champion Elena Rybakina in her quarter-final.  

If Gauff’s takedown of Siedel is any indication, she can adapt her game to the indoor clay courts at Stuttgart. Paolini is scripting a recovery after a disappointing start to the season.

The Italian World No. 5 made her Miami Open semi-final debut before arriving in Stuttgart but lost to eventual winner Aryna Sabalenka in straight sets. Paolini is now one win away from equalling her best result of the season when she takes on Gauff on Day 8.

The winner of Saturday’s quarter-final will face either top seed Aryna Sabalenka or Belgium’s Elise Mertens in the last four. Gauff and Jessica Pegula are the two Americans left in the women’s singles draw. Pegula takes on Ekaterina Alexandrova to remain in contention in Stuttgart in her quarter-final. 

Pegula’s title performance in Charleston pushed her compatriot Gauff to fourth in the WTA rankings. A place in the semi-final for Gauff, assuming Pegula does the same, will help Gauff keep pace with her countrywoman in the WTA Rankings.
