Daniil Medvedev handed hefty fine for misconduct at Australian Open 2025

Daniil Medvedev fined $76K for anti-sports sentiment.
World number five Daniil Medvedev was stunned by qualifier Learner Tien, in the second round of the Australian Open 2025. The Russian dropped the first two sets but struck back, to force the contest into a five-setter.
The match headed into a tiebreak, and while it seemed that Daniil Medvedev would pull off another comeback victory, it wasn’t to be for the three-time Australian Open finalist. During the match, the 28-year-old lost his cool at various stages and did not even attend the post-match press conference.
Earlier, the fifth seed was fined $10,000 for a meltdown during his five-set first-round win against Thailand’s Kasidit Samrej, when he mangled his racquet and destroyed the camera. Against Tien, he once again threw his racquet toward the sidelines, skidding across the court until it reached an advertising panel near his bench.
The former US Open champion coped with an additional $66,000 fine for throwing his racquet, thereby violating several rules and guidelines of the sport. Moreover, the Russian argued with the chair umpire regarding his repeated foot fault.
The encounter ended post-midnight at around 2 am. Medvedev decided to skip the post-match conference despite the journalists having already arrived at the location. With a hefty fine of $76,000 as well as a disappointing second-round exit at the hands of a qualifier, Medvedev has had a tournament to forget in Melbourne Park.
The Russian will hope to come back stronger in the forthcoming tournaments. This early loss could displace him out of the top five. The remaining top seeds including Jannik Sinner, Alexander Zverev, and Carlos Alcaraz are still going strong in the marquee event.
Fourth seed Taylor Fritz was stunned by Gael Monfils in the third round of the Australian Open 2025 while Jakub Mensik shocked sixth seed Casper Ruud in four sets in the second round of the competition. Seventh seed Novak Djokovic remains alive after two close battles in his initial two rounds, followed by a thumping victory over Tomas Machac in the third.
The Serbian keeps his hopes of a record 25th Career Grand Slam, 100th title, and 11th Australian Open title. However, he could potentially face Alcaraz in a spectacular quarter-final, making his road to fame difficult.
