The Davis Cup World Group I playoffs are set to take place in January-February next year.
India will face off against Togo in the Davis Cup 2025 World Group I playoffs. The International Tennis Federation (ITF) conducted the draws for World Group I and II playoff earlier this month.
The tie will be played across two days — two singles matches on the first and second days, followed by doubles match on day two.
India prevailed over Pakistan 4-0 in the 2024 playoffs and clinched a spot in the World Group 1 first round. Once there, it was a role reversal, with India getting whitewashed by Sweden 0-4 in September to find themselves back in the playoffs.
Meanwhile, Togo will find themselves in the World Group 1 playoffs for the first time when the 2025 edition of the Davis Cup gets underway. They moved ahead in the competition at the expense of Indonesia (3-2) in February 2024 in the World Group II playoffs and Lativia (4-0) in September 2024 in their World Group II tennis tie.
India was left holding the runners-up trophy thrice — 1966, 1974, and 1987. India finds itself among the seeded nations at No. 10, while Kazakhstan is the top seed. Their unseeded opponents in the playoffs are making their World Group I debut. The Indian Davis Cup squad have played in the World Group I stage three times this decade (2021, 2023, and 2024)
Aside from their loss to Sweden this year, the Indians in 2021 failed to get past Finland (1-3) and in 2022 against Norway (1-3).
On the three occasions India made the final, they lost to Australia 4-1 in 1966, handed the win to South Africa by a walkover in 1974, and to Sweden 5-0 in 1987.
Fifty-two nations will compete across 26 home-and-away ties in the World Group 1 and World Group 2 playoffs next year. The ties will take place in late January or early February 2025, with the choice of dates being left to the host nation.
