Indian veteran Rohan Bopanna and his Australian partner Matthew Ebden booked their spot in the semifinals of the men’s doubles event at the French Open on Thursday after a hard-fought battle against Belgian duo Sander Gille and Joran Vliegen.

The match, played on Court Suzanne Lenglen in Paris, saw the Indo-Australian pair prevail 7-6(3), 5-7, 6-1 after two and a half hours of intense action.

Bopanna and Ebden got off to a strong start, edging the opening set tie-break 7-3. However, Gille and Vliegen showed great determination to level the match by taking the second set 7-5.

In the deciding third set, it was the 43-year-old Bopanna and Ebden who raised their level. They broke their opponents’ serve twice and wrapped up the set 6-1 to seal their place in the last four.

This victory sets up a semifinal rematch against 11th seeds Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori of Italy. Bopanna and Ebden defeated the same Italian pair in the Australian Open final back in January, winning 7-6(7-0), 7-5.

Prediction

Rohan Bopanna and Matthew Ebden have displayed impressive performance statistics this season, including their Grand Slam victory at the Australian Open. They have a formidable serve and strong net play, critical for doubles success. Bopanna, a veteran with a powerful serve, pairs well with Ebden’s agility and baseline strength.

Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori however has been more resilient on the red dirt and have slight edge at Stade Roland Garros. Italian Duo recently defeated Bopanna and Ebden at similar kind of surface at Rome Masters. Their key strength lies in baseline rallies and tactical play.

Result: Bolleli/Vavasorri to win in three sets.
