US Open 2026: Full updated schedule for Sunday (September 6), Day 8
Tough tests await defending champions Carlos Alcaraz and Aryna Sabalenka
Day 8 of the US Open 2026 marks the start of the pre-quarterfinals, after a marathon Day 7 that finally sorted out the third-round field. Coco Gauff eased past Cristina Bucsa, Iga Swiatek needed two tie-breaks to see off Marie Bouzkova, and Naomi Osaka survived a scare against Elise Mertens to keep her resurgence going.
There were shocks too as Madison Keys went down to Qinwen Zheng despite leading 5-0 in the third set, and Amanda Anisimova was upset by Anastasia Potapova. The night session ran deep into the early hours, with Alexander Zverev, Elena Rybakina, and the much-anticipated Learner Tien-Jakub Mensik clash all finishing up well past midnight local time.
On Sunday, the tournament’s biggest names return to headline the last-16 stage. On the Arthur Ashe Stadium, defending champion Aryna Sabalenka opens against Taylor Townsend before the day’s marquee men’s clash, as Carlos Alcaraz faces 20th seed Tommy Paul in his toughest test since returning from injury.
Ben Shelton and Stefanos Tsitsipas round out the stadium, along with a fourth-round meeting between Anna Kalinskaya and Emma Navarro.
The Louis Armstrong Stadium has plenty riding on it too, with former champion Daniil Medvedev taking on fellow former finalist Frances Tiafoe, and home favourite Jessica Pegula up against Sorana Cirstea.
