World No. 1 Sinner meets 2022 Halle champion Hubert Hurkacz on Sunday.

Jannik Sinner has made his first final as the World No. #1 at the Halle Open 2024. The 22-year-old is in the running to become the first World No. #1 since Andy Murray in 2016 to win an event in his first week on top of the ATP Rankings. Murray had bagged the 2016 ATP Finals trophy in London.

Sinner began his campaign in Halle with three consecutive three-set wins before coming through in two sets in Saturday’s semifinals. The top seed was still made to work for his 6-4, 7-6(3) victory against Zhang Zhizhen. Both players won 80 per cent of their first-serve points. Zhang led the leaderboard with nine aces to the eight by Sinner.

Sinner is now through to his first final on grass, with his previous best on the green surface being a semi-final showing at last year’s Wimbledon (lost to Novak Djokovic). Standing in the way of his maiden grass-court title is Hubert Hurkacz.

Hurkacz, who won here in 2022, is one win away from clinching his second Terra Wortmann Open after he overcame World No. #4 Alexander Zverev on Saturday. With the 7-6(2), 6-4 win, Hurkacz prevented the tournament’s two top seeds from playing in the final. The Pole made it to the final without dropping a set.

The fifth-seeded Pole stole the show with 17 aces, besides saving all four break points against the in-form Zverev to earn his first top #5 win of 2024.

Jannik Sinner vs Hubert Hurkacz preview

Both players have been among the titles this season. Sinner has won three hard court events (Melbourne, Rotterdam, Miami), while Hurkacz took the clay court title at Estoril.

The two players who had paired up in the doubles at Halle lost in the quarterfinals and will put their friendship aside in the summit clash. Sinner’s path to the final took him past Tallon Griekspoor, Fabian Marozsan, Jan-Lennard Struff, and Zhizhen Zhang. Hurkacz saw off challenges from  Flavio Cobolli, James Duckworth, Marcos Giron, and local favourite Alexander Zverev to make his second final of the year.

Like Sinner, Hurkacz, too, is a former Wimbledon semifinalist. The World No. #9 reached the semifinal round in 2021.

Head-to-head records

Matches – 4

Jannik Sinner – 2

Hubert Hurkacz – 2

Hurkacz and Sinner are two apiece in their career head-to-head as they head for their first championship round face-off since the Miami Masters event in 2021. It will also be their first match in the ongoing season. Sinner triumphed at their last encounter in the ATP Masters 1000 Monte Carlo.

Where and how to watch the live streaming and TV broadcast of Jannik Sinner vs Hubert Hurkacz, Halle Open 2024 final in India?

The finals of the Terra Wortmann Open between Jannik Sinner and Hubert Hurkacz will be streamed live on Discovery India for the benefit of viewers in the country.

Prediction

Hubert Hurkacz is a solid player on grass and is fresh from claiming an upset over the 2024 French Open finalist Alexander Zverev. The Pole would back himself to win on his favourite surface. He has won all the tiebreaks played this week and will be a confidence booster should events head in that direction in the final against Sinner.

Sinner is showing signs of being a worthy World No. #1 in the ATP rankings. He held his nerve as he navigated through tricky opponents this week and has thrived with his exquisite strokes and on-court acrobatics for all to see.

Tiebreakers, being Hurkacz’s forte, will benefit the Pole, but the Italian has played more than his fair share this week. Sinner should look to keep the ball in play like he has done so far and push Hurkacz into making those unforced errors.

Sinner has been consistent with those aces, sending down 49 of them so far and has been equally consistent in winning those first-serve points, averaging 80% at this stage.

Hurkacz has not held back from unleashing those aces either. The big-serving pole sent down 64 of them and has won an average of 83% first serve across the four rounds played so far.

Sinner can hold his own against Hurkacz on grass when he goes up against the 6’5” Pole on Sunday and make this surface his own in the coming years, and winning at Halle could mark the beginning of it.

Result: Jannik Sinner to win in three sets.
