Indian Sports Calendar June 2024: Major events to look forward to this month

Indian cricket team looks to end its 17-year T20 World Cup title drought.

Indian athletes are working hard to qualify for the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympics and Paralympics. The month of June in the Indian sports calendar will have many important Olympic and Paralympic qualifying tournaments where athletes will try to meet the strict qualification standards.

In May, some Indian athletes made good progress with qualifying. Boxers Nishant Dev, Amit Panghal and Jaismine qualified for the Paris Olympics by reaching the semifinals of the Olympic qualifying tournament in Bangkok.

In wrestling, Aman Sehrawat and Nisha Dahiya helped increase India’s total wrestling quotas to six at the final Olympic wrestling qualifiers in Istanbul, Turkey. Their performances capped off a successful qualifying cycle for Indian wrestlers.

Away from Olympic sports, the Indian Premier League cricket tournament concluded with the Kolkata Knight Riders winning their first title in 10 years by defeating the Sunrisers Hyderabad by 8 wickets in the final.

Major events to watch in June in Indian Sports Calendar

Archery

A big month for Indian Archery. The final Olympic qualifier will take place on 15-16 June in Turkey. Post that, the Antalya Archery World Cup is scheduled between 18-23 June.

Athletics

Indian athletes will be gunning for Olympic qualification standards in events across the world. Neeraj Chopra who missed out on some key events for recouping and precaution measures would be looking to make a mark at Paavo Nurmi Games among top tier Javelin throwers.

Badminton

Top Indian shuttlers will be looking to regain some form in the build-up to the Paris Olympics. Indonesia Open will be a high-profile event scheduled for this month with the world’s top shuttlers vouching for glory in Indonesia.

Beach Volleyball

2023-24 Beach Volleyball Continental Cup will take place in Ningbo, China between 16-23 June. This competition will act as an Olympic qualifier as well.

Cricket

The 2024 Men’s T20 World Cup will be held between June 1-29 in the West Indies and USA. A total of 20 teams will be participating. Format: Group Stage -> Super 8 -> Semis -> Final.

Fencing

Bhavani Devi returns to action after missing out on Paris Olympics quota. The Indian fencer would seek glory at the Asian Fencing championships.

Football

Sunil Chhetri, the long-standing captain and pivotal figure of the Indian national football team, has announced his retirement from international football. Chhetri will play his final match on June 6 against the Kuwait national team at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata

Golf

Aditi Ashok who has been India’s top women’s golfer will make her major debut at US Women’s Open.

The 2024 FIH Pro League season will return for London Leg, the Indian hockey team will face Great Britain and Germany. both will look to consolidate their position.

The 2024 Modern Pentathlon World Championships will take place in China from June 10-16. This prestigious event will see athletes competing for Olympic quotas, crucial for qualification to the Paris 2024 Olympics. It will feature the world’s top modern pentathletes in a multi-discipline competition.

Rowing

Balraj Panwar who has qualified for the Men’s Single Scull (M1X) event at the Paris Olympics 2024 after securing third place at the Asian and Oceania Olympics and Paralympic Qualification Regatta will be in action this June as he prepares to compete in the world stage in Paris

Sailing

India has sent a 23-member squad to the Munich World Cup. Shooters will look to perform at their best as NRAI finalize the shooting contingent after the coveted events.

Sports Climbing

The last series of Qualifiers for Sports Climbing will take place before the contingent for Sports Climbing for Paris 2024 is finalized.
