Italian, Jannik Sinner, recently marked his return after three months.
Jannik Sinner has withdrawn from the 2025 Hamburg Open. The world No #1 officially announced his decision on Friday, ahead of his semi-final showdown against Tommy Paul in Rome. Sinner fought back from a set down to beat Paul and setup a finale meeting with Carlos Alcaraz.
The Italian’s withdrawal from the ATP 500 event follows his intense return at the Italian Open 2025; his first appearance on tour since a three-month absence.
Sinner had been sidelined from competition since agreeing to a quiet suspension with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) earlier this year, a development that kept him out of action following his second Australian Open title in January earlier this year.
What about his comeback? Well, the 22-year-old’s comeback has been electric in Rome. A three-time Grand Slam winner, Sinner has reached the semi-finals without dropping a set, showing glimpses of his best tennis on a surface that has never favored him.

“I’m very happy, happy to be back here. It has been a very long, long three months,” Sinner told about his comeback.
If we dig up stats, only one of his 19 ATP titles has come on clay, which came back in 2022 at the Croatia Open Umag, where he defeated Carlos Alcaraz in three sets. Despite that, the home crowd in Rome erupted as Sinner returned to the court after missing last year’s edition.
While Rome had Sinner’s long-awaited appearance, Hamburg will miss its chance to host the Italian superstar. But the timing suggests strategy over injury. With the French Open beginning in just over a week, the decision to skip Hamburg could be about preserving energy for a bigger stage.
World No #4, Alexander Zverev, who has accepted a wild card, will take Sinner’s place. The German, a Roland Garros finalist himself, now becomes the headline act on home soil.
