Wimbledon 2025: How Jannik Sinner ended Carlos Alcaraz's grass court dominance

Alcaraz’s multiple streaks came to an end following Sinner’s victory at Wimbledon 2025.

Jannik Sinner put an astonishing end to Carlos Alcaraz’s dominance at Centre Court, as the Italian avenged his Roland Garros defeat to lift his maiden Wimbledon title. The World No. 1 made a quick start to the title clash, with an early 4-1 lead.

However, the Spaniard came storming back to seal the opening set, with a ridiculous rally that went his way on set point. However, a little lapse in focus and concentration in the second set cost the reigning champion. Sinner held serve effectively and didn’t take any half-measures at crucial moments, a sign of a major change in his mindset since the loss in Paris.

Alcaraz continued to make occasional mistakes in the third set, which were converted with success by the top seed. Despite Alcaraz’s valiant attempts, he could not break back due to Sinner’s accurate serving and ability to find the lines consistently.

Sinner found himself 2-1 up, but did not relax. He knew there was no room to take things easy, as once he gave away the control to Alcaraz, the match would slip from his hands.

The 23-year-old used the learnings from his French Open loss to play aggressively under pressure, giving Alcaraz no chance. Serving at 4-3, the Italian was in trouble at 30-30 and missed the first serve for the third consecutive instance.

However, the determination shone through, as he crunched a 110mph second serve to go within touching distance of glory. While Carlos Alcaraz managed to hold on, Sinner did not let the pressure get to him next time, as he had three Championship points to put an end to Alcaraz’s streak against the Italian, and at SW19.

Sinner’s victory over Alcaraz not only ended the Spaniard’s perfect record on Centre Court but also snapped several impressive streaks Alcaraz had built leading up to this highly anticipated final.

The US Open 2022 was Alcaraz’s first Grand Slam final, which he won against Casper Ruud. The Spaniard then won consecutive Roland Garros and Wimbledon finals, and reached his third consecutive SW19 final in 2025.

A re-match of Paris 2025, the Spaniard went down in four sets, which ended his 5-0 record in finals at major events. This record is only bettered by Roger Federer amongst men, who won all eight straight finals, before losing to Nadal in 2006 at the French Open.

Alcaraz’s 24-match winning streak came to an end

After losing to Holger Rune in the Barcelona final, Alcaraz won the Italian Open, defeating local hope Jannik Sinner, then defended his crown coming back from two sets down and saving a couple of championship points against Sinner yet again.

The 22-year-old began the grass season with a bang, as he cruised past a relatively favourable draw to win his second Queen’s Club title. Reaching the finals of Wimbledon extended his streak to 24 wins, before losing eventually in the title clash.

Undoubtedly, Alcaraz and Sinner are the two best players currently. While Alcaraz reached the peak of his powers after mid-2022, the Italian has never looked back since 2023. Every time these two meet on court, irrespective of the surface, they treat tennis fans to an exhibition of mouth-watering and heart-stopping tennis.

While their battles have often been close and action-packed, since 2024, the Spaniard has had the wood over his opponent, enjoying a five-match winning streak, including three finals and two semi-finals. This one-sided affair came to an end, as the Italian won arguably the most prestigious title by prevailing in four sets.
