Iga Swiatek cut short Emiliana Arango’s US Open debut to send the Colombian player home in just 60 minutes, with the reigning Wimbledon champion securing a 6-1, 6-2 win over Arango in their maiden WTA tour meeting.

Swiatek did not concede a single breakpoint against Arango en route to her 50th win of the season as she made the perfect start in her bid for another title this season, adding to her maiden titles at Wimbledon and the Cincinnati Open.

The 24-year-old Swiatek made the record books with her latest victory, her 65th straight opening round win in a WTA singles event. She surpassed Monica Seles’ long-standing record of 64 consecutive opening-round wins to ease into the second round.

Swiatek will take on Suzan Lamens, who is making her US Open debut in the second round. Lamens got the better of American Valerie Glozman 6-4, 6-2, to book her spot in the Round of 64. Lamens, who is Dutch, has been steadily climbing the WTA Rankings, rising from No. 87 in January to a career-high ranking of No. 58 in August.  

Since falling to a season low of No. 8 in June, Swiatek scripted a turnaround. The No. 2 seed is 18-2 since the conclusion of the French Open. She wrested the World No. 2 position from Coco Gauff after ending her 13-month title drought at SW19 in July.

If Swiatek goes all the way in New York, it will be her second US Open title after 2022. She will also move to 7-0 in Grand Slam singles finals. Judging by her domination of Arango in the opening round, the Pole is primed to go the distance in the Big Apple.

The Pole has been a beacon of consistency in the last few seasons. That trend continues with Swiatek winning her 50th match of the 2025 season, making her the only woman to win 50+ matches in each of the last four seasons.

Swiatek has made winning a habit and has been nothing short of relentless with 67 wins in 2022, 68 in 2023, and 64 in 2024.

Lamens, her Dutch rival, made a Grand Slam debut at the Australian Open this season. She reached the second round at Melbourne and London earlier this year.

Lamens can count the semi-final appearance at Rouen and the quarter-final stage of ‘s-Hertogenbosch among her exploits in this season.

In April 2024, Lamens defeated Jelena Ostapenko 7-6(7), 6-4 in their Billie Jean King Cup Group I match for her first Top 10 win. She scored her maiden tour title at the Oeiras Ladies Open in Portugal in the same month.

The 26-year-old earned her biggest tour-level win at the WTA 250 Japan Open in October last year. Her quarter-final run in Colombia helped the Dutch player break into the WTA Top 100.
