Daniil Medvedev will be Hamad Medjedovic’s first top 10 opponent on the tour this year.

Defending champion Daniil Medvedev is set to face Serbia’s Hamad Medjedovic in the Round of 32 at the ATP 1000 Italian Open on Monday, May 13. Medjedovic has had a promising start to his campaign in Rome, with wins over Alexei Popyrin and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.

However, in the Round of 32, he’s up against the biggest challenge. Daniil Medvedev is one of the most consistent stars on the tour; the Russian regularly reaches the last four of all major events. However, he eventually fails to make it past the finish line.

Since the start of 2024, the same story has unfolded repeatedly. He ended as a runner-up at the Australian Open and the Indian Wells Masters. Meanwhile, he lost in the semi-finals at the Dubai Tennis Championships and Miami Open.

On the other side, Hamad Medjedovic will face a top 10 opponent for the first time this year. Moreover, the Serb has managed to mark the Italian Open by reaching the third round of an ATP 1000 event for the first time in 2024. However, playing against Daniil Medvedev won’t be an easy task for the 20-year-old.

Daniil Medvedev vs Hamad Medjedovic preview

Following the withdrawal of Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz from the Italian Open, Daniil Medvedev entered the tournament as the second seed. Medvedev, who sustained a hip injury during the quarter-final of the 2024 Madrid Open against Jiri Lehecka last week, looked fresh during his first match in the Italian capital.

The Russian commenced his campaign in Rome against British tennis star Jack Draper. The Brit defeated Borna Coric in the first round; however, facing Medvedev was a tough grind for Draper. Losing 7-5, 6-4, Jack Draper’s Italian Open campaign ended against the 2021 US Open champion.

Meanwhile, Medjedovic defeated the likes of Camilo Ugo Carabelli and J. J. Wolf in the qualifiers to secure a spot in the main draw. The 20-year-old started his journey in the main draw with a comfortable 6-3, 6-2 win over Australia’s Alexei Popyrin.

In the second round, he gave 30th seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina a tough time and snatched the victory 7-6 (7-4), 6-4. Interestingly, Hamad Medjedovic recorded 10 aces against Fokina, compared to the Spaniard’s one. The Serb has played four marches in the last six days and he’s set to lock horns against the defending champion.

Prediction

When Daniil Medvedev was forced to retire against Jiri Lehecka in the Madrid Open quarterfinal, it seemed like the Russian would not be able to safeguard his title in Rome. However, the former World No. 1 has proven his determination and dedication to the sport. Medvedev got a comfortable start to his campaign with a win over Draper.

Meanwhile, Hamad Medjedovic has also exhibited his on-court prowess and precise shot control by not dropping a set yet in Rome. Medjedovic has reached the third round of an ATP 1000 event for the first time and he’s looking promising in his Italian Open debut.

However, Daniil Medvedev’s experience of playing on the big stage will put him in pole position to win the match. On the other side, Hamad Medjedovic has nothing to lose, as he has already given his best career performance. Hence, an upset is unlikely.

Prediction: Daniil Medvedev to win in straight sets
