Novak Djokovic returns to action after missing out Madrid Open 2024.

Italian Open 2024 got underway with Qualifiers starting on 6th May in Rome, serving as the last major tune-up event before the French Open later this month. The combined ATP and WTA event regularly attracts the sport’s elite, and 2024 is no exception despite some high-profile injury absences.

On the men’s side, Novak Djokovic returns to action after skipping Madrid and will start as the title favourite to capture a seventh Italian Open title. However, he’ll face stiff competition from rival Rafael Nadal, who is seeking an 11th Rome crown in what could be his final year on tour. Other contenders include clay specialists Casper Ruud and Stefanos Tsitsipas, the recent Monte Carlo champion.

The men’s draw will be missing some star power though, as Carlos Alcaraz (arm injury) and Jannik Sinner (hip) are expected to sit out. Last year’s winner Daniil Medvedev is also a question mark after retiring from his Madrid quarterfinal.

On the women’s side, reigning champion Elena Rybakina will defend her title against a loaded field. World no #1 Iga Swiatek arrives red-hot off her Madrid triumph over Aryna Sabalenka. The Australian Open champ Sabalenka and rising American Coco Gauff also loom as major threats in Rome.

With the French Open positioning on the line, the Italian Open is shaping up as a pressing event in the 2024 clay court season.

The Internazionali BNL d’Italia, commonly referred to as the Italian Open, is scheduled to commence on May 6 at the Foro Italico in Rome. The prestigious tennis tournament will span two weeks, concluding on May 19.
