Stefanos Tsitsipas will face Nicolas Jarry for the fifth time on the tour.

Stefanos Tsitsipas maintained his mastery over Alex de Minaur with a 6-1, 6-2 win in the Italian Open 2024 on Tuesday. The Greek wrapped up the opening set in a mere 23 minutes and the match itself in exactly 60 minutes, as he gave a masterclass in clay court tennis to Minaur.

At 13-2 on clay this season, Stefanos Tsitsipas is in his fourth straight quarter-final in Rome. He continues to impress and script a turnaround from 11-6 at the beginning of the 2024 season on hard courts. Tsitsipas suffered a mini slump that saw him briefly drop out of the top 10 in the ATP Rankings.

The Greek tennis star surrendered only one break of serve at 4-1 in the second set but broke back immediately to extinguish any hopes De Minaur may have harboured about a comeback. During the one-hour face-off, Tsitsipas won 56 per cent of his return points (23/41), converting five of eight available break-point opportunities.

Stefanos Tsitsipas is now into his fifth quarter-final in Rome, with the first coming in 2019, a year after his debut at the Italian Open. He reached the semifinals in 2019 and 2023 and the finals in 2022.

Chilean Nicolas Jarry advanced to the quarterfinals of the Italian Open for the first time with a 7-5, 6-3 win over French qualifier Alexandre Muller at the Foro Italico on Tuesday. Jarry, seeded 21st, will take on sixth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas in the last eight.

It will be Jarry’s third ATP Masters 1000 quarter-final since Shanghai in 2023 and the Miami Masters this year. The Chilean beat two Italians en route to his maiden last-eight appearance in Rome: Matteo Arnaldi, 6-2, 7-6(6), and wildcard Stefano Napolitano (6-2, 4-6, 6-4).

Stefanos Tsitsipas vs Nicolas Jarry preview

Stefanos Tsitsipas remains on course for his second Masters trophy of the season following his convincing win in the Monte Carlo final against Casper Ruud, 6-1, 6-4. It was the title run in Monaco that propelled the 25-year-old back to the top-10 bracket in the ATP Rankings.

Tsitsipas saw his perfect 10-0 head-to-head record against the Aussie end when de Minaur prevailed in the last meeting in Acapulco. Nevertheless, the sixth seed flipped the script in Rome in his fourth-round match against de Minaur to turn one of his best performances of the year to go up 11-1 in his meetings with the Aussie.

The winner of the match between Tsitsipas and Jarry will go on to face either Hubert Hurkacz or Tommy Paul in the semi-final meeting in the bottom half of the draw. Hurkacz and Paul were responsible for causing major upsets in the tournament. Hurkacz sent home the 10-time champion in Rome, Rafael Nadal, in the second round. Meanwhile, Tommy Paul accounted for defending champion Daniil Medvedev in the fourth round.

Head-to-head records

Matches: 5

Nicolas Jarry: 3

Stefanos Tsitsipas: 2

Jarry leads Tsitsipas by a solitary win at 3-2 in their head-to-head. The duo has taken alternate wins against each other. It was the Chilean who took the win in their last meeting in 2023 in Beijing. Jarry took the win with an identical 6-4, 6-4 scoreline in both sets.

Where and how to watch the live streaming and TV broadcast of Stefanos Tsitsipas vs Nicolas Jarry, Italian Open 2024, quarter-final in India?

Indian viewers can catch all the live action in the Italian Open quarter-final clash between seasoned campaigner Tsitsipas and relative newcomer to Rome, Nicolas Jarry, on the Sony Network. The SonyLiv streaming service, a part of the Sony stable, is ideal for on-demand viewing.

Prediction

Tsitsipas returned to his winning ways when the action moved to the clay courts of Europe. He lifted the trophy in Monte-Carlo, besides reaching the Barcelona Open final a fortnight later. The Greek is 14-2 in the clay court segment of the tour so far this season. He is also the second-highest seed left in the fray after third-seeded Alexander Zverev. The 2022 Italian Open finalist has a win-loss record of 17-6 in Rome.

Nicolas Jarry, with a career-best appearance in the round of 64 from three main draw appearances at Rome, is unlikely to cause much trouble for Tsitsipas in the Italian capital. It is worth noting that Jarry leads Tsitsipas head-to-head, so that is something the 25-year-old will have to be wary of.

The Chilean is on four wins from 10 matches on clay in the 2024 season and is yet to get off the mark in Rome. Jarry and Tsitsipas met four times last year and split the meetings 2-2. Tsitsipas won a sole title last year at Los Cobos, an ATP 250 event.

This season, he won his first ATP 1000 title, the Monte Carlo Masters. In contrast, Jarry won two titles last season at Geneva and on home turf in Chile. The 2024 season is yet to see the Chilean win a trophy.

Both players have won 71% of first-serve points and have taken an almost identical percentage of service games. Tsitsipas has a significant lead, coming to break points converted at 45% to Jarry’s 31%. One statistic Tsitsipas has to keep an eye on is the number of double faults he makes. His tally of 39 outnumbers Jarry’s 16.

Tsitsipas will be banking on his experience on tour as he looks to add to his trophy cabinet and take a second Masters this season.

Prediction: Stefanos Tsitsipas to win in three sets.
