Jakub Mensik put on a clinical display in his fourth-round takedown of Alexander Bublik to 6-3, 6-2 in just 56 minutes. The No. 22 seed has extended his unbeaten run since Miami to nine straight wins. Mensik is 2-1 against Bublik, having defeated the Kazakh twice this season at Rotterdam in February and now in Madrid.

Mensik claimed victory across two identical sets by converting three of four breakpoint opportunities and ten aces to secure victory in the shortest match of Day 9. At 19 years and 6 months, the Czech is the fifth teenager to make the last eight in Madrid, exactly six months older than Carlos Alcaraz, who achieved the feat in 2022.

Francisco Cerundolo advanced with a 7-5, 6-3 win in 90 minutes over top seed Alexander Zverev on Tuesday. The Argentine now has three consecutive wins over the World No. 2. In 2024, the two met in Madrid at the same stage of the tournament, with Cerundolo winning in straight sets 6-3, 6-4. 

Zverev was the last former champion left in the fray at the clay-court Masters 1000 event. Novak Djokovic crashed out of the second round after losing to Matteo Arnaldi, while defending champion Andrey Rublev followed the Serb in the second round after losing to Alexander Bublik.

A second straight win over top-seed Alexander Zverev in Madrid ushers Cerundolo into his second quarter-final in the Spanish capital. Miami champion Jakub Mensik will take on Cerundolo, who has reached the last eight of his first clay-court Masters without dropping a set. 

The Argentine is also in his third ATP 1000 quarter-final of the season, alongside Arthur Fils, as the only players to get to the milestone in 2025. Their only previous meeting in Beijing in 2024 was a close match, with Mensik taking the opening set to a tie-break. Though unable to come away with a win, the Czech teenager gave Cerundolo a run for his money. The 7-6(4), 6-1 win at the China Open did not come easily in his maiden clash with Mensik.
