Jannik Sinner became the first Italian tennis star to become World No. 1.

Italian tennis star Jannik Sinner has been enjoying a stellar season in 2024. In June, he became the first Italian tennis player to reach the top spot in the rankings. Since then, he has kept his spot safe and has reached at least the quarterfinals of every event he has played.

Thus, let’s take a look at the titles the 23-year-old has won in 2024:

Australian Open

Jannik Sinner started the season on a high note by entering the Australian Open as the fourth seed and folding Andrey Rublev 6-4, 7-6, 6-3 in the quarterfinals. He reached the semifinals without dropping a set, where he was up against Novak Djokovic.

The Serb defeated the 23-year-old at the ATP Finals in December 2023. Completing the redemption, Sinner broke Djokovic’s 34-match unbeaten streak at the Rod Laver Arena. The Italian overpowered Djokovic with the winning percentage on his first serve (83% compared to Djokovic, 67%).

In the final, he lost the two initial sets against Russia’s Daniil Medvedev, who was on a hunt for his second Grand Slam title. However, much like the 2022 Melbourne final, Medvedev gave away the lead and lost the match in a five-set marathon. With the triumph, Sinner proved that he’s the future of tennis.

Rotterdam Open

Continuing the Australian Open momentum, Jannik Sinner gave a nearly flawless performance at the Rotterdam Open. Throughout the campaign, he dropped only one set, against France’s Gael Monfils in the third round. He faced Australian tennis star Alex de Minaur in the final, who also failed to find a way to beat Sinner. With a final scoreline of 7-5, 6-4, the Italian won his second title of the season.

Miami Open

At the Indian Wells Masters, Sinner lost to arch-rival Carlos Alcaraz 1-6, 6-3, 6-2 in the semifinals. However, he made a spectacular return at the 2024 Miami Open. With wins over Andrea Vavassori, Tallon Griekspoor, Christopher O’Connell, and Tomas Machac, he reached the semifinals, where he locked horns against Daniil Medvedev for the first time since the Australian Open final.

However, despite a different venue, the result remained the same. Medvedev stood no chance in the match and ended up losing 6-1, 6-2. In the final, he faced Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov, who defeated Carlos Alcaraz, Alexander Zverev, and Hubert Hurkacz en route. Nevertheless, the final ended up being a one-sided affair, as Dimitrov lost 6-3, 6-1.

Halle Open

After injury scares during the 2024 French Open, Jannik Sinner made his return on the tour at the Halle Open. Seeded first at the grass-court tournament, Sinner started his campaign with a win over Tallon Griekspoor. He later played two three-set matches against Fabian Marozsan and Jan-Lennard Struff to secure a spot in the semifinals, where he locked in against China’s Zhang Zhizhen.

With a resounding 6-4, 7-6 (7-3), victory over the Chinese tennis star, Sinner advanced to the final. In the final, he faced his then-doubles partner Hubert Hurkacz of Poland. Hurkacz fired 13 aces against the Italian and made no double faults. However, Sinner had a first-serve percentage of 94%. Interestingly, both stars failed to break each other’s serve even once.

With the final scoreline reading 7-6 (10-8), 7-6 (7-2), the ATP World No. 1 won the fourth title this season. Sinner also joined the elite list of players who won their first tournament after becoming the World No. 1.

Cincinnati Open

Jannik Sinner clinched the Cincinnati Open title, defeating American Frances Tiafoe in straight sets, 7-6 (7/4), 6-2. This marked Sinner’s third major tournament win of the year.

The match started with a tense first set, where Tiafoe threatened early but couldn’t capitalize on two break points. Sinner’s powerful serving proved decisive throughout the contest. He held five of his ten service games without losing a point, allowing Tiafoe to win only 11 return points in the entire match.

After edging the first-set tiebreaker, Sinner dominated the second set. Tiafoe fought hard, saving three match points, but ultimately couldn’t match Sinner’s consistency.

US Open

Jannik Sinner defeated four Americans on his way to the title in the US Open. He claimed a straight set victory over Taylor Fritz in the final at Flushing Meadows. Sinner defeated Fritz 6-3, 6-4, 7-5 to capture his second grand slam title of the season.

With an 88% first-serve win percentage, the Italian managed to keep his lead over Fritz throughout the match. Meanwhile the American’s serve was broken on six instances and could only break Sinner’s twice in the match.

In the second set and third set, Sinner did not lose a single point on his first serve and unleashed fiery groundstrokes to dominate the proceedings.

Shanghai Masters

Jannik Sinner became the champion in Shanghai after defeating Novak Djokovic in the final. He beat Djokovic 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 in an hour and 37 minutes. Sinner only dropped a single set in the event against Tomas Martin Etcheverry in the third round.

The Italian hit 8 aces and 22 winners in the final against Djokovic. He did not face a single breakpoint during the match and broke Djokovic’s serve once. The four-time champion struggled to take advantage during the match as he was in search of his 100th tour title and his first in this season.

Sinner also became the first Italian to win the singles title since the event’s inception into the ATP tour in 2009.

Six Kings Slam

An exhibition tournament, indeed. But there’s no harm in winning a title, is there? And you should definitely add it when you have just beaten your biggest rival on tour. Jannik Sinner beat Carlos Alcaraz in three sets (6-7(5), 6-3, 6-3) to lift the first-ever Six Kings Slam trophy. The win was the Italian’s first against Alcaraz this year and also first in four meetings.

Sinner fought back from a set down to take the final two sets and clinch the title. Courtesy, the win, Sinner, current World No. #1, also pocketed a whopping $6 million in prize money (in addition to the $1.5 million appearance fee), making it the latest prize money in tennis tournament history.

He was sharp throughout the match and had an answer to almost everything Alcaraz threw at him, including a 109-mph forehand. It was quite fitting that Sinner-Alcaraz clash followed the Novak Djokovic-Rafael Nadal match. As tennis fans bid goodbye to one storied rivalry, another has just taken shape.
