Jannik Sinner vs Daniel Altmaier prediction, betting tips & odds, head-to-head, preview: Shanghai Masters 2025

Sinner will be the top seed in Shanghai following Alcaraz’s withdrawal.

Jannik Sinner will start 2025 Shanghai Masters with quest for a fourth tour-level title of the season, beginning against Daniel Altmaier in the second round. It will be Sinner’s first meeting with the 27-year-old German since their second-round clash at Roland Garros in 2023.

Sinner and Altmaier are tied at 1-1 in their head-to-head matches. The World No. 49 defeated Sinner in Paris to avenge his loss to the Italian a year earlier in the opening round at the US Open. Both matches went the distance, needing the full five sets to decide the outcome.

Sinner is fresh from winning his third title of the season at Beijing, his second in two years. The Italian defeated first-time tour-level finalist Learner Tien in straight sets for his 21st ATP Title in the Chinese capital.

It was Sinner’s first win in three finals, having lost in New York to Carlos Alcaraz and retired in the title round clash against the Spaniard in Cincinnati. The Italian World No. 2 secured his 18th hard-court victory following the title run in Beijing.

Altmaier defeated Australian qualifier Tristan Schoolkate in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4, in one hour and 22 minutes to advance to the second round. The unseeded German is making his second appearance at the ATP 1000 event. Altmaier exited in the first-round last year, losing to Japan’s Yoshihito Nishioka 4-6, 6-3, 7-6(2).

Preview

The withdrawal of Alcaraz from the starting line-up at the 2025 Shanghai Masters results in a shuffle, with Sinner taking over as the top seed. The 24-year-old Sinner bagged his first title in Shanghai last year with a 7-6(4), 6-3 win over four-time champion Novak Djokovic in the finals. It was the first time an Italian lifted the trophy in the history of the event.

Alcaraz’s departure from the ATP 1000 event means that Sinner will have an easier path to the trophy. The Italian has emerged as the favourite to retain his title and become only the third player to win the event back-to-back. Andy Murray achieved the feat in 2011, followed by Djokovic in 2013.

Altmaier’s best result in an ATP 1000 event was an appearance in the 2023 quarter-finals of the Madrid Open. The German was impressive in his takedown of Schoolkate, facing no breakpoints, and churned out 26 winners en route to his opening-round victory over the Australian. It was the second meeting of the season between Altmaier and Schoolkate.

Match Prediction

Altmaier’s best chance of surviving the second-round clash with Sinner is to unsettle the Italian as he did in their meeting at Roland Garros two years ago. The German held his nerve despite losing the opening set tie-break and fought back to prevail in a tightly fought five-setter.

However, the Sinner of today rarely puts a foot wrong and seldom turns up unprepared. In the Beijing final last week, Learner Tien engaged the Italian by getting out of his comfort zone and keeping the ball in play. Sinner countered the American’s playbook by denying him the longer rallies to turn the tide.

The Italian will have the odds heavily stacked in his favour despite Altmaier’s strong opening round victory.

Result: Jannik Sinner to win in three sets.
