Jannik Sinner withdraws from Montreal Masters event; Know reason here

Jannik Sinner’s only Canadian Open title triumph came in 2023.

Italian tennis star Jannik Sinner has officially announced his decision to withdraw from the National Bank Open this year.

Tennis Canada confirmed on July 24 that the World No. 1 has withdrawn from the ATP Masters 1000 event, which will begin on August 1, to be held at the IGA Stadium in Montreal.

It’s a bit of a surprise that Sinner had actually been named on the entry list earlier this month, alongside home favourite Félix Auger-Aliassime and former champion Alexander Zverev, who steps in as the tournament’s top seed now.

Carlos Alcaraz was already out of the picture, still nursing the wrist injury that prevented him from competing in the French Open and Wimbledon.

Speaking about his decision to opt out of the tournament, the 24-year-old said:

“After carefully considering all the factors together with my team, we have made the difficult decision to withdraw from Montreal. It is never easy to miss such an important event, but we believe this is the right decision to prioritize my health. I’m disappointed not to be there, but I look forward to returning to Montreal in the future.”

After a disappointing performance at the Australian Open, Sinner has made a remarkable comeback in his season. He has compiled a 44-3 win-loss record and won six titles, including Wimbledon 2026 and five consecutive Masters victories.

This is now two years running that Sinner has skipped the Canadian leg. Last year’s edition came just two weeks after Wimbledon, tight enough that most understood the call.

This year, organisers pushed the gap to three weeks specifically hoping to avoid a repeat, and the move still failed, with Djokovic also pulling out, which would mean all three of Sinner, Alcaraz and Djokovic are set to miss the competition.

The withdrawal also draws the curtains on Sinner’s potential ambition of sweeping every Masters 1000 title in a single season. A title in Montreal would not have been a herculean task for the Italian, given his strong record on hard courts and a relatively weak field.

Eyes now turn to Cincinnati, where the draw opens the day Montreal wraps up, with the US Open waiting right after.
