Sabalenka and Carlos Alcaraz are the only two tennis players who have been nominated for the Laureus World Sports Awards.
Carlos Alcaraz, who won the Wimbledon Championship and French Open titles in 2024, along with a silver medal at the Paris Olympic Games has been nominated for the Laureus World Sportsman of the Year Award. Earlier the organisers announced that Jannik Sinner’s nomination would be withdrawn, after the Italian was suspended for three months due to the doping scandal.
At just 21 years of age, Alcaraz has already registered himself as one of the best among the current crop of players. With four Grand Slams under his belt, there is no limit to the success Alcaraz can achieve during the course of his career.

Having won the Breakthrough of the year award in 2023, the Spaniard expressed his delight on being nominated for the most prestigious global sporting award, “Laureus has a special place in my heart, and I am deeply honoured to be nominated for the Laureus World Sportsman of the Year Award.
“In 2023, I won the Laureus World Breakthrough of the Year Award and – as if the evening could get any better – I also met Lionel Messi on the red carpet!
“When I reflect on 2024, my mind goes to that incredible moment at Wimbledon when I picked up my second men’s singles trophy against Novak Djokovic, an athlete who has won this prestigious Award five times.
“The Laureus Awards celebrate the very best from the world of sport, and to be nominated for the Sportsman of the Year Award by the world’s media is an achievement and an incredible honour,” said the current World No. #3.
While Alcaraz is the only tennis male player to feature in the list, Aryna Sabalenka is one of the six nominees for the Laureus ‘Sportswoman of the Year’ award. Year 2024 was one to remember for the Belarusian who surpassed Iga Swiatek to become the number one ranked player.
Sabalenka started off with a second consecutive title wins at the Australian Open, but a gruesome shoulder injury kept her away from tennis action, and the 26-year-old had to skip Wimbledon and the Paris Olympics. Upon her return though, she bounced back in style winning the Cincinnati Masters and the US Open 2024.
The award winners will be announced at a ceremony in Madrid, Spain, on April 21, 2025.
