Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal as Team Europe captains? Laver Cup founder Tony Godsick was tennis legends to return

Roger Federer played his last professional tennis match at the 2022 Laver Cup.

Tony Godsick wants Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal to become the captains of Team Europe in the upcoming editions of the Laver Cup.

Laver Cup is the brainchild of Tony Godsick, and he has also been the agent at IMG for Monica Seles, Lindsay Davenport, and Anna Kournikova. In addition to that, he has also been linked to 20-time Grand Slam champion Federer throughout his career.

During an interview with Spanish outlet MARCA, Godsick revealed that Federer was the one who came up with the name of the Laver Cup. He also revealed that they took the format inspiration for the tournament from Ryder Cup, a biennial men’s golf competition played between European and United States teams.

He also talked about the tournament’s popularity in North America. The 2024 edition of the Laver Cup was played in Berlin, Germany. However, the Laver Cup has also been played in Chicago (2018) and Boston (2021). Talking about the competition’s success in North American editions, Godsick said, “It may seem so, but I remember that Chicago was a total success and Boston the same.”

He added, “I think in the United States there are many sports and therefore a lot of competition with the NBA, NFL? In Europe they play two of the four majors, many Masters 1000, there is a tradition of tennis. Maybe the vision will change now that the team from the Rest of the World has won the last two editions.”

Later in the interview, he affirmed that he wants to see Federer and Nadal as the captains of Team Europe. Godsick stated that he wants the two to accompany each other in the tournament. He said, “I hope so. My dream is for Roger to be captain and Rafa assistant and then the other way around. In this way, they would be longer in office.

He further added, “The rivalry they both had on the court was very special, but I think the friendship of the two outside is even more special. They are the clear example that all competitors can get along.”
