World No. 1 and last season’s Madrid Open finalist, Iga Swiatek, will start her Madrid Open 2024 campaign against Chinese tennis player Wang Xiyu on Thursday in women’s singles.

The top-seeded tennis player will be high on confidence after clinching the Indian Wells title for the second time in three years, taking her overall titles to 19.

In her recent performances, following the Australian Open 2024 setback, the Polish star went on to clinch the Qatar Open 2024, she pounded Russia-born Kazakh Elena Rybakina in straight sets. This was her hat-trick of title at the Qatar Open.

Swiatek advanced to the semifinals of the Dubai Tennis Championships. However, she had to experience another setback in the season as she lost to Anna Kalinskaya in straight sets.

Thereafter, Iga bounced back in style and lifted the Indian Wells championship, defeating Maria Sakkari in the final. One month later, she marked her presence at the Stuttgart Open as a two-time defending champion and made it to the semifinals.

However, world number four Elena Rybakina stood strong in her way to reach the final clash as she outclassed the world number one tennis player in three sets and ended her 10-match winning streak of the tournament.

Wang Xinyu on the other hand, achieved her first-ever main-draw match win at the Madrid Open in dramatic fashion on Wednesday. She saved an incredible 10 match points to defeat Bulgaria’s Viktoriya Tomova (ranked No. 81) in a thrilling 5-7, 7-5, 6-4 comeback victory. Wang trailed 7-5, 5-2 but fought back, saving match points on her second serve and surviving a marathon game that went to deuce 12 times before finally breaking Tomova’s serve to level the second set.

The Chinese player narrowly lost the first set in a tiebreaker, 6-7 (5), but came back stronger, rallying from the brink of defeat in the second set. In the decisive set, the 23-year-old carried her momentum and clinched the match 2-1 (6-7 (5), 7-6 (4), 6-2).
