Elena Rybakina and Taylor Fritz returned after missing the previous tournament.

The Madrid Open 2025 is gearing up to be one of the most exciting events on the tennis calendar, with some of the biggest names set to compete. Alexander Zverev arrives with serious momentum after completing a title hat-trick in Munich and reclaiming the World No. 2 spot.

In shocking news, Carlos Alcaraz has recently withdrawn from the ATP-1000 event, while Novak Djokovic, a three-time champion in Madrid, returns looking to rediscover his rhythm ahead of Roland Garros.

On the women’s side, all eyes will be on Iga Świątek and Aryna Sabalenka, who come in as the top seeds but won’t have it easy. Jelena Ostapenko, known for her fearless game and unbeaten record against Swiatek, could once again throw a spanner in the works.

Elena Rybakina’s return adds another layer of intrigue, especially after her slide out of the top 10. Rising stars like Jasmine Paolini and Mirra Andreeva are also making waves and could cause some serious upsets. Here’s a look at the top four notable players who’ve pulled out of the Madrid Open 2025.

10. Zhizhen Zhang

Zhizhen Zhang’s last appearance on the ATP Tour was at Indian Wells 2025, where he lost in the first round to Gabriel Diallo. Since then, his absence has sparked speculation, as there has been no official statement regarding any injury or fitness issue affecting the Chinese player. Alexander Bublik replaces Zhang and is set to take on Alex Michelsen in the first round.

9. Karolina Muchova

In a last-minute withdrawal, 12th seed Karolina Muchova stunned fans by withdrawing from the Madrid Open 2025 due to illness. Her withdrawal hands a walkover to Yuliia Starodubtseva, who now moves into the next round to face Liudmila Samsonova, fresh off a win against Caroline Dolehide earlier in the day.

Speaking on her decision, Muchova said, “Unfortunately, I have to withdraw from Madrid due to illness. I didn’t get the update I wanted to share, but I’ll be back on court soon. Thanks for all your support”.

8. Jordan Thompson

Jordan Thompson has withdrawn from the Madrid Open, continuing his absence from tennis after he missed last week’s Barcelona Open.

After the Australian Open, Thompson had announced a break from tennis due to a lingering calf strain. He returned to Indian Wells and has since competed in three tournaments. It remains uncertain whether the same injury has flared up again or if he’s dealing with a new concern.

7. Marketa Vondrousova

Markéta Vondrousova, the 2023 Wimbledon champion, has withdrawn from the 2025 Madrid Open due to ongoing shoulder issues.

The 25-year-old has been struggling with the injury since February, having retired in the second round of the Adelaide International due to the injury. The Czech’s most recent match was a second-round loss to Mirra Andreeva at the Dubai Open.

6. Shang Juncheng

Shang Juncheng will also miss the Madrid Open due to injury concerns. The 20-year-old Chinese talent has not competed since the Australian Open, where he retired from his first-round match against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina due to injury. Subsequently, he underwent successful surgery on his right foot in March 2025.

5. Barbora Krejcikova

Two-time Grand Slam champion Barbora Krejcikova has pulled out of the WTA 500 Stuttgart Open due to persistent back problems. These ongoing injuries had previously kept her from competing at the Australian Open, as well as the Indian Wells and Miami tournaments.

The Czech star is struggling with her form and fitness, raising questions about her participation in the rest of the clay court season. In addition to missing Stuttgart, Krejcikova will also be absent from the Madrid Open following her withdrawal.

4. Alejandro Tabilo

Alejandro Tabilo has had an abysmal season this year, with a win-loss ratio of 4-8. However, the Chilean tennis player staged an incredible upset in Monte Carlo, defeating Novak Djokovic in straight sets. Though he lost to Dimitrov later, he showed signs of a better clay season.

However, his hopes of a comeback were dashed by a left wrist injury, ruling him out of the Munich Open and then the Madrid Open.

3. Danielle Collins

Danielle Collins is out of the Madrid Open 2025 after losing her top-10 ranking. The American has not had a great season, and her inability to defend the Miami title proved costly.

While her reason for not competing in Madrid is unknown, the American has been managing chronic health conditions, including endometriosis and rheumatoid arthritis, which could have potentially forced her to opt out of the competition.

2. Jannik Sinner

World No. 1 Jannik Sinner continues to sit out of competition as he serves a three-month ban, but the Italian is set to make his return at the Italian Open, where he’ll defend his title. Despite his absence, Sinner has retained the top ranking, helped by Carlos Alcaraz failing to defend his Barcelona crown and Alexander Zverev’s inconsistency on tour.

With Novak Djokovic showing signs of a decline and the rest of the top players also struggling for form, Sinner will likely continue to dominate for the rest of the season, provided the 23-year-old can perform well in Rome.

Carlos Alcaraz, one of the favorites for the title and the central figure in the build-up to the Madrid Open 2025, has unfortunately been ruled out of the tournament. Speculation had been swirling around his participation, and the Spaniard confirmed his withdrawal during the pre-event press conference.

Alcaraz revealed that in addition to the right thigh injury sustained in Barcelona during the final clash against Holger Rune, where he took multiple timeouts, he has also been dealing with discomfort in his left hamstring. “I’ll be back in training in a week or two, but I’m taking it step by step,” said Alcaraz, who remains hopeful of returning at full fitness in time for Roland Garros, and possibly the Italian Open as well.
