Jannik Sinner is all set to defend his title at Australian Open 2025.

The first Grand Slam Major of the 2025 calendar year is on the horizon as the Australian Open 2025 is all set to start on January 12. Tennis stars from across the globe will be desperate to get their hands on the silverware and some of the biggest names will be competing in the tournament.

Defending champion Jannik Sinner will play his first match of the season, skipping the United Cup and Brisbane International. His triumph included defeating 10-time Australian Open winner Novak Djokovic in the semifinals and Daniil Medvedev in the finale.

The Serbian, potentially at the fag end of his career is looking for his 100th title and 25th Grand Slam. Returning to the Rod Laver Arena, he will have his task cut out with several top seeds vying for the trophy.

On that note, let’s take a look at the top five title favourites in men’s singles at Australian Open 2025.

5. Taylor Fritz

Taylor Fritz was one of the most improved players from last year and the American will now be looking to convert his good form into results by winning championships. Fritz fell agonizingly short twice in 2024, at the US Open and then at the ATP Finals, losing to Jannik Sinner on both counts in the finale.

With plenty of exposure at the biggest stage, Fritz will hope for a solid start to the Australian Open. He has begun the new season with a win, for Team USA at the United Cup Finals, where he beat Hubert Hurkacz to help his side lift the trophy.

4. Daniil Medvedev

Daniil Medvedev known for producing his best when it matters the most has fallen off the radar over the last year. 2024 was an uncharacteristic year for the Russians they did not make the impact that was expected of them. Medvedev starts 2024 year on a positive note but loses to Sinner in the Australian Open final.

The unconventional Russian got his revenge on the Italian by defeating him in the quarter-finals at Wimbledon but faced the wrath of Alcaraz in the semi-finals. Sinner once again outperformed him in the US Open and Shanghai Masters.

During this period, Medvedev suffered several early exits but managed to remain at #5 in the ATP rankings. With the Australian Open nearby, he will aim to better his performance last year and add to his Grand Slam tally.

3. Novak Djokovic

Novak Djokovic is the greatest ever to have played at the Rod Laver Arena, and he might be out there for one last time. As the record holder of 10 AO titles, Djokovic will look for one final hurrah to end on a high. A triumph at the 2025 Australian Open will give him his 100th career title and 25th Grand Slam, which would be a fairytale ending to an illustrious career.

However, poor form and lack of adequate game time could hurt the Serbian. Sinner knocked him out last year in the semis and will need to contend with a formidable lineup as he is seeded 7th currently. The tennis fraternity will wish for Djokovic to silence his critics and showcase his magnificence for potentially one final time in Melbourne.

2. Carlos Alcaraz

4-time Grand Slam Winner, Carlos Alcaraz is yet to win the Australian Open and will be desperate to complete the Golden Slam. At the 2024 AO, Alcaraz was stunned by Alexander Zverev in the quarterfinals. The Spaniard skipped the United Cup and Brisbane International competition and is expected to be fresh and raring to go Down Under.

Alcaraz had an interesting end to the year. After losing the Olympic gold to Djokovic in Paris, the Spaniard faced a second-round exit at the US Open, and lost the Six Kings Slam to Sinner and the Shanghai Masters. However, given his tremendous temperament, the two-time Wimbledon winner is expected to give his all in Melbourne.

1. Jannik Sinner

The current world number one enters the Australian Open as the hot favorite, given his purple patch since 2024. The defending champion defeated Andrey Rublev, Novak Djokovic and Daniil Medvedev to lift his maiden Major Grand Slam trophy. Jannik Sinner ended the year on a high by winning the US Open.

2024 demonstrated the Italian’s ability to shut out the outside noise and solely focus on his game. He did not let the controversy regarding the doping scandal bother him and proved his haters wrong by immediately winning in Cincinnati and then lifting the trophy at Flushing Meadows. The top seed is expected to carry his good form in the new year and start the season with a bang.
