Zeynep Sonmez is the defending champion of the Merida Open.

The Merida Open 2025 Akron is a WTA 500 tournament played on outdoor hard courts as part of the 2025 WTA Tour. Now in its third edition, the tournament has been upgraded from WTA 250 to WTA 500 status and rescheduled to replace the canceled San Diego Open.

The event serves the primary objective of preparing players to adjust to the clay format after months of hard-court tennis. However, with back-to-back tournaments in the form of Qatar and Dubai championships, many top stars have opted out of the Merida Open.

Renowned stars like Aryna Sabalenka, Iga Swiatek, Coco Gauff, Elena Rybakina, Jasmine Paolini, and more will miss the event. None of the top 9 WTA ranked players are competing, with Emma Navarro, the World Number Nine set to be the top seed in Mexico.

He will also be joined by Paula Badosa, who despite reaching the semi-finals of the Australian Open, finds herself outside the top 10, due to Mirra Andreeva‘s heroics in Dubai.

Donna Vekic, Anna Kalinskaya, Marta Kostyuk, Beatriz Haddad Maia, Maria Sakkari, Magda Linette, and defending champion Zeynep Sonmez will be seen showcasing their talent at the WTA Merida Open, whose main draws commence from February 26, with the semi-finals and finals set to take place on March 1 and 2 respectively.

The tournament is a WTA-500 event, helping players boost their rankings ahead of major events such as Indian Wells and the Miami Open. Navarro, who was pushed to the ninth spot in the WTA rankings needs only 16 points to replace Andreeva. If the American, were to dislodge Qinwen Zheng from the eighth position, she must secure 76 points in Mexico.

Meanwhile, Badosa was axed from the top 10 after Andreeva’s sensational triumph. However, she too isn’t far away from the eighth spot. Currently, at 3698 points, the Spaniard is 22 points away from Andreeva’s 3720 and 82 away from Zheng’s 3780.

Vekic, who had an excellent 2024 has not delivered so far in the new season. As a result, she is currently ranked 20. A win in Mexico would elevate her to the 15th position. The projected semi-finals are Navarro vs Kalinskaya and Vekic vs Badosa. Essentially, one of these players will be able to win their first title of the 2025 season.
