Garcia beat former World No. 1 Naomi Osaka to reach the fourth round.
Caroline Garcia booked herself a spot in the Miami Open 2024 fourth round against Coco Gauff with a 7-6 (4), 7-5 win on Sunday over Naomi Osaka. It was a virtual slugfest between Garcia and Osaka, with both players trading aces. There were 28 aces in all – 16 from Osaka and 12 from Garcia. The Frenchwoman saved three of four breakpoints while the one-time World No. 1 Osaka saved seven of nine. Garcia leads 2-1 in their head-to-head this season.
Third seed Coco Gauff, down a break in the first set at 2-4, shifted into top gear to score a facile win over unseeded Frenchwoman Oceane Dodin. Gauff reeled off 10 games in a row against the hapless Dodin, who lost an opportunity to hold serve for a 5-3 lead. Dodin, who came through as a lucky loser, played a part in her downfall with consecutive double faults in the eighth game of the first set.
The US Open champion is in an ideal position to become the first American since Sloane Stephens in 2018 to win in Miami. She has won 22 of the last 23 matches on home soil – her loss to Maria Sakkari at the Indian Wells semifinals the previous week was the only bump in the road.
Coco Gauff vs Caroline Garcia preview
Gauff, by her standards, saw her fortune dip after mounting a successful defence of her ASB Classic title earlier this year. She lost two consecutive semifinals in Melbourne against Aryna Sabalenka and in Indian Wells against Maria Sakkari. In between there was the quarter-final exit against Ukrainian qualifier Anna Kalinskaya at Dubai.
Now Gauff is one of five Americans to make the round of 16 in Dubai, and she could meet one of them – Emma Navarro or Jessica Pegula should one of them get past the round of eight. Navarro and Pegula will be playing in an all-American quarter-final on Monday.
The American is through to the round of 16 without dropping a set. Clocking 74 minutes, her match against Dodin was one of the quickest of the third round.
World No. 27 Caroline Garcia is into the last 16 of the Miami Open 2024 by securing her second win in three meetings against Naomi Osaka. The Japanese player is still on the hunt for a title and on the comeback trail after a year away from the sport. The straight-set win against Osaka 7-6(4), 7-5 will give her some much-needed confidence as she faces off against Florida local Coco Gauff in the next round.
Head-to-head records
Matches – 4
Coco Gauff – 2
Caroline Garcia – 2
Gauff and Garcia share the spoils equally in their head-to-head. Both have won two matches each. Their rivalry, which began in 2021, saw the American take an early lead to go up 2-0 at Indian Wells and Doha. Garcia evened the score with two wins in 2022 at the US Open and the WTA Finals.
The duo are in their fifth face-off and first since 2022. At stake for both players is a chance to make the quarterfinals in Miami for the first time.

Prediction
Coco Gauff and the veteran Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia head into their match tied 2-2, and their last meeting was at the tail end of the 2022 season. Garcia will look to maintain her momentum from her win over Osaka and the confidence from winning her last two encounters against Gauff.
The World No. 3 will be looking to take home the Miami Open trophy at her home in nearby Delray Beach. Bolstered by a crowd of partisan Americans, expect Gauff to take her second win of the season. Garcia will have to do battle with the crowd in Gauff’s corner and Gauff herself. She will have to pull out all the stops if she is to win this one.
Garcia’s numbers portray the Frenchwoman as the more consistent of the two. She has won 75% of service games to Gauff’s 71% this season. While Gauff saves more breakpoints 60% to Garcia’s 45.5%, she is also more prone to double faults (109). Garcia’s double faults are far fewer (38). Garcia also has an edge in the number of aces served in 2024 – 105 to Gauff’s 74. Garcia will need to increase her return games won percentage if she is to carry the match, which stands at 20.8% and is less than half of Gauff’s 49.5%.
Result: Caroline Garcia to win in three sets.
