This will be the first meeting between both players.

Jannik Sinner won’t have time to dwell on his semifinal loss to Carlos Alcaraz, as the Miami Open 2024 is hot on the heels of the BNP Paribas Open. Last week, the Spaniard halted the Italian’s flawless season start at Indian Wells.

At 22, Sinner must now re-focus on South Florida, where he’s the second seed at the Miami Open. Competing in Miami will revive pleasant memories for the Italian; it was here that he reached his first ATP Masters 1000 final at 19, ranked No. 31 in the PIF ATP Rankings.

Sinner replicated that result in 2023 but fell short of the trophy last year due to Daniil Medvedev’s 7-5, 6-3 victory in the final. Entering the hard court tournament as a Grand Slam champion, he aspires to advance further and claim his second Masters 1000 title.

Andrea Vavassori, who celebrated his first Grand Slam main draw victory at last year’s French Open, is set to challenge his compatriot in the second round. He also made it to the quarterfinals at the ATP 250 event in Buenos Aires last month. Vavassori’s peak Masters performance was reaching the second round at the ATP Masters 1000 in Madrid last season.

Jannik Sinner vs Andrea Vavassori  – Preview

Andrea Vavassori endured two grueling rounds of qualifying, requiring three sets to vanquish both opponents. In a match against Croatia’s Duje Ajdukovic, Vavassori rallied after a first-set loss, enduring two tiebreaks in the subsequent sets for a nail-biting finish. He triumphed with scores of 4-6, 7-6 (2), 7-6 (5). His second round qualifying victory was less arduous, as he overcame Monaco’s Valentin Vacherot with scores of 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 (3).

Andrey Rublev looms as a potential quarterfinal adversary for Jannik Sinner, while a semifinal clash with last year’s victor, Daniil Medvedev, is also possible. Additionally, a matchup with 2022 finalist Casper Ruud in the semifinals could materialize. The World No. 3 is vying for his third trophy of the season, following triumphs at the Australian Open and in Rotterdam.

Prediction

Jannik Sinner, a formidable contender on tour, embarked on the season with a 16-match winning streak. Despite consecutive semifinal losses at Indian Wells, he remains a strong candidate to outshine his competitors at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami.

The 12-time titleholder clinched the ATP Masters event in Montreal last season, triumphing with the loss of just one set. Sinner’s formidable form persists this season; he thwarted Novak Djokovic’s bid for an eleventh Melbourne title and secured a victory in Rotterdam by a similar margin.

Sinner’s hard court record stands at 11-1, while Vavassori’s is 9-3 this season. The World No. 148 has logged six hours on the court, including his qualifying rounds and now faces a refreshed Jannik Sinner for a chance to advance.

Statistically, both players are well-matched, with Sinner holding a slight advantage in service games won—84% compared to Vavassori’s 78%. Their break-point conversion rates are nearly identical, with Sinner at 43% and Vavassori at 42%.

Ultimately, the victor may be determined by experience in high-stakes matches and this is where Sinner’s edge becomes apparent.

Result: Sinner to win in straight sets.
