Nagal beat Wong in their only previous meeting.
After winning on his Miami Open debut on Monday, Sumit Nagal will face Coleman Wong in the second qualifying round of the Miami Open 2024. Nagal defeated Canada’s Gabriel Diallo in straight sets in the first round of qualifying. The Indian kept his composure through the first set tiebreak and took the second set for the loss of only two games. Nagal defeated the 6 foot 8 inches tall Diallo 7-6(3), 6-2 to advance to the second qualifying round.
Sumit Nagal, who broke into the ATP Top 100 in February after winning the Chennai Open, will play Coleman Wong for entry into the main draw. Nagal made it to the main draw of the BNP Paribas Open last week as a lucky loser following a last-minute withdrawal by Rafael Nadal. The Indian, making his North American ATP Masters debut, lost his first-round match against Milos Raonic at the Indian Wells event.
Coleman Wong, who like Nagal is playing his first Miami Open, defeated France’s Hugo Gaston. The 19-year-old from Hong Kong got past the first qualifying round in three sets 6-2, 3-6, 6-2.

Prediction
With more big-stage experience than Wong, Nagal can be expected to take the second-round qualifying match. Now on verge of reaching the main draw of the second Masters event this year, the Indian finds the 212th-ranked Wong in his way.
The Miami Open is Nagal’s fourth appearance in an ATP Masters event and will be his second in a main draw after reaching the first round at Indian Wells last week.
Wong won the boys’ singles trophy at the 2022 Australian Open with Bruno Kuzuhara as his doubles partner.
Breaking down the numbers, Nagal has won 67% of his first-serve points. Wong is nearly identical, with 70% of first-serve points won. But his second serve winning percentage of 40% trails Nagal’s 58%.
Nagal also has an edge in total service games won — 78% to Wong’s 73%. This could prove to be a factor in close matches as serves can win matches. Coming to 2nd serve return points won, the Indian has a whopping 13% lead — Nagal (51%) and Wong (38%). All these figures lead to a cumulative of 49% total points won for Nagal and 46% for Wong.
An additional advantage for Nagal is his 15-7 win-loss record on hard courts this season. Wong heads into the face-off with a 6-5 win-loss record in 2024.
Result: Sumit Nagal to win in three sets.
