Czech Tomas Machac has already seen off Andrey Rublev and Andy Murray in previous rounds.

Jannik Sinner saw off the challenge from Christopher O’Connell on a windy day in Miami to reach the quarterfinals of the Miami Open 2024. The second-seeded Italian advanced to his fourth consecutive Miami quarter-final, winning 6-4, 6-3 in one hour and 51 minutes.

It was a tricky first set for the Italian as O’Connell went up a break to take an early lead 3-1. Sinner had an opportunity to even things out in the sixth game but lost the chance after a lengthy game that crossed the 13-minute mark. The Italian drew level in the eighth game taking it in a rapid 2 minutes, 46 seconds. The first set took nearly an hour to wrap up for the World No. 3.

Sinner turned things around with an early lead in the second set 3-0 and wrapping it up in 53 minutes, making just two unforced errors to O’Connell’s 10. He is now 1-1 in the head-to-head series with the 29-year-old, having avenged his 2021 Atlanta loss to O’Connell.

The World No. 3 takes on Czech Tomas Machac, who eliminated Italian Matteo Arnaldi with a 6-3, 6-3 victory in the day’s opening play.

Machac, 23, will make his top 50 debut next week after rising 18 spots to No. 42 in the ATP Live Rankings. The Czech is into his first Masters 1000 quarter-final in his first main draw in Miami.

Jannik Sinner vs Tomas Machac – Preview

Sinner edges closer to his rematch with Carlos Alcaraz after the Indian Wells semi-final defeat at the hands of the Spaniard. First up is his game with Machac – who took down World No. 5 Andrey Rublev in the second round and two-time champion Andy Murray in the third round. The Czech player is making his first main draw appearance at Miami – his previous attempts in 2022 and 2023 ended in the qualifying rounds.

Jannik Sinner has dropped only one set so far into the tournament. Only Tallon Griekspoor took a set off the Australian Open Champion. The third-round match against the Dutch was also his longest, clocking 2 hours and 23 minutes, in the tournament.

The Italian’s gap with Alcaraz for the No. 2 position has widened after his semi-final loss at Indian Wells. Winning in Miami will help in this cause.

Prediction

Sinner has trotted away to win 19 of his 20 matches out of the gate this year. Rafael Nadal and Noak Djokovic are the only two active players who have won more matches in their first 20 of a calendar year.

Machac is currently playing the best tennis of his life, and his quarter-final run at Miami will push him to No. 42 in the world when the revised rankings come out after the tournament ends. As luck would have it, the Czech will find the surging Italian Jannik Sinner in his path as he aims to reach his maiden semi-final.

The 23-year-old brushed aside Sinner’s Davis Cup teammate Matteo Arnaldi to make the last eight for the time in his career. Like the Italian, he has dropped only one set in the tournament in his match against veteran Scot Andy Murray. The Czech has also had to make his way through a tough draw compared to his opponent.

Sinner continues to pile on and drown his competition in aces – 99 this season compared to Machac, who has half the number at 50. The Italian’s formidable serve has won him 93% of service games played, while Machac is at a respectable 81%. The gap may narrow as the Czech appears to be shrugging off his slow start to the season.

For Machac, the percentage of breakpoints saved will be an area of concern – 49% to Sinner’s 81%. The Czech will do well to work on his breakpoint conversion rate, currently at 32% to Sinner’s 46%. Overall, Machac has a win rate of 51% on total points won, and Sinner is on 55%.

If Machac is to get past Sinner, he will have to shorten his points, particularly after his marathon 3-hour, 28-minute match against Andy Murray. The Czech player’s 10-5 on hard courts this season is an improvement on last year when he was 8-8 across all events participated in. Sinner’s 16-1 on hard courts will appear less daunting now that he has a couple of big wins under his belt.

Result: Jannik Sinner to win in three sets.
